In the middle a thick forest full of dangers that scared almost every person who had ever dared enter into it sat a singular small hut. Thousands of bookshelves lined the walls of one of the three rooms in the hut, each of them filled to the brim with books. Strewn across the room's floor were crumpled up wads of papers, broken writing utensils, haphazardly tossed books, old spilled inkwells that had since dried, almost unreadable notes, and used up candles cast aside.
In the room there was a wooden desk and chair, as well as three chests closed tight. The desk was decorated on top with writing utensils, papers, inkwells, scribbled notes, partially written journals, and a few lit candles that illuminated the room. In its drawers were empty journals, unopened inkwells, candles that had yet to be lit, and other unused supplies, as well as a handful of lighters.
In the chair sat a person with long blonde hair, who at the moment was writing multiple notes while reading a book they held open in one hand. Glancing back and forth between their notes and the book as they went.
The room the person was sitting in was by far the most used room in the hut. The other two rooms were a simple kitchen along with a single table and chair. The last room was a small room that held a bed and a chest filled with clothes, as well as some piles of uncleaned clothes. They would get cleaned later. When the blonde person was less busy.
There wasn't much to the hut, but for the blonde person it was just enough to continue their work. Although few knew who he was, she was the leading expert on practically all things magic. Yet still, they kept their name quiet, preferring his privacy over any fame they would get from their knowledge.
She closed the book in her hand, placing it on the desk near the edge. He moved his notes to the side, pulling one of their journals towards herself. They opened it up to where they last left off, and with the help of their notes began to write once again.
This time the blonde made sure to keep her writing neat and even, unlike in her notes. He was completely focused, almost entirely unaware of the world around him. They filled up page after page, throwing notes to the floor once they were finished with them.
Time sped by and soon the candles were completely melted down and the light began to flicker and die. The person looked up finally, their newest journal now complete. She blew out the candles and pushed them aside of the desk, grabbing and setting down more to replace them.
A knock on the hut door jolted him, causing him to hit the desk with knee and send the book they were previously reading crashing down onto the floor.
He pushed herself away from the desk and stood up, walking out of the room and towards the hut's front door, grabbing the journal and carrying it with them.
They opened the door to reveal a man in a suit colored in different shades of black and blue, with pale blue hair
"Kaylee." He greeted with a small nod of his head. She gave a small smile back to him.
"Pleasure as always Silver." Kaylee stepped aside and let Silver into his home. He was one of two people who came to the hut, along with his brother Gold.
"I apologize for coming earlier than expected, usually the travel here takes longer." Silver explained, and they nodded in understanding.
"No big deal, I just finished my writing anyways." Kaylee replied, handing him the journal.
Although Kaylee had no interest in being famous, he still wished to share what he knew to the rest of the world, and Silver and Gold gave her that opportunity.
The person they worked for, a man who Kaylee had never met and who she knew next to nothing about although he didn't care about knowing, would give her books and artifacts for her to research and would distribute his books across the lands.
They had no idea why the man had offered them this, or what they got out of it, or even how they'd learned of Kaylee's passion, but they weren't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. The man only gave Kaylee access to artifacts temporarily, but the blonde was only interested in studying them and had no need or want for them once they finished their research.
Silver took the book from them with a few small nods. He never spoke much to Kaylee when he came, more just trying to get things done quickly. Kaylee didn't mind that, in fact they preferred to get the interactions done and over with so they could continue their research and writings as soon as possible.
"Gold will be coming later this month to take the artifacts, and he will be delivering a few new ones for you. If you have any requests for anything else, we ask that you give my brother a written list of what you want." Silver replied, skimming through the journal as he spoke. "I will be taking my leave now."
"Look forward to seeing Gold soon." They said as Silver left, shutting the door maybe just a bit too eagerly once he was fully out. They had nothing against them, despite finding his constant calm tone a bit unsettling, they simply wanted to return to their work as quickly as they could. Some food would also be nice.
Kaylee sat down on the floor near their kitchen, not really doing anything in particular. She was aware that there was a chair nearby to sit in and a bedroom to rest in, but he had no interest in going to either place at the moment.
Their attention was grabbed when a small mainly green bird landed on their windowsill with a paper in its talons.
She recognized the multicolored bird as a cuban tody named Aranha who belonged to someone he wrote to often. Aranha belonged to a traveling witch named Inmo who had sent a letter to Kaylee a couple years ago, asking for advice on an experiential potion he was in the process of making at the time.
They still had no idea how Inmo managed to figure out how to contact them or even who they were, but they had decided to send a letter back with advice out of curiosity. Now the two sent letters to one another, and the writer got to hear about Inmo's many discoveries and experiments regarding their magic.
It was odd, honestly, being able to hold such a dear friendship with someone he'd never met, but Kaylee enjoyed exchanging the letters too much to stop anytime soon.
They gently grabbed the paper from Aranha and unraveled it to read. Kaylee could only wonder what new thing the witch was up to now.
Dear Kaylee,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have some very exciting news to tell you!
