𝑭OCUS ON YOUR STUDIES, her parents may have said, but it was summer and Naseem had the urge to let her self wander. Physics was draining for an artistically-minded young adult, and the summer holidays were a small escape from the pains of growing and the pressure of expectations.
It happened like this: May sixth. Naseem, Wendy, and Eudora were hanging out at Benoit’s Bistro for brunch on Naseem’s first day back. The weird thing was was that a lot of Benoit’s staff were very cute-looking, for some reason? A good chunk of the staff were newer recruits, high school and college students. One of them especially caught Naseem’s eye──Kai. His name tag said “Kai", and he was this tall Japanese dude who often wore raglan, long-sleeve t-shirts and had a very nice voice whenever he talked to customers. And when the Bistro would close, sometimes Naseem, while walking the family dog, would see him through the windows of the café pulling a varsity jacket over his shoulders as he talked to his coworkers, adjusting a baseball cap over his head. When he adjusted that damn cap, Naseem swore that she would talk to him at some point.
He was definitely the age of the college student. Naseem had no doubt. Possibly a jock wannabe. Maybe he played baseball? Maybe he didn’t, maybe he just liked the sport. He was also too sweet. Like, he started small talk so easily? And you couldn’t help but smile or laugh because he acted so genuine and interested in what you were saying. Naseem had been to the Bistro so many times to know that. So what did Wendy and Eudora say to that in the group chat at one in the morning? Ask him out.
That was the obvious answer.
So maybe Naseem was being a little boy-crazy for her first few days back from university, but she needed an escape from how terrible she was at physics. She wanted to make new friends as well as reconnect with the old. If she was drawn to someone, she was drawn to someone. She had to do something about it. She didn’t want to be bored this summer. Well, as bored as you could get in a town that was a walking urban legend. Nevertheless, she wanted this summer vacation to be one she would think about afterwards. She had so much to do this summer, from posting new cover songs to messing around in the mall like she had always done in high school, and this became an addition to her summer schedule.
And maybe one of the things that would make it less boring was this: a cute guy that ended up giving her his number before she could after two weeks of visiting Benoit’s. He beat her to it. She had been asked out before, but not like this━━she never got someone’s number right then and there. This would be a new experience. He took interest in her, too. Something invisible strung them together, drew them closer over this summer. Naseem couldn’t pinpoint what it was, but romance wasn’t always a thing you could put in words, right?
