This is a fancy intro chapter, but please do read it to get in the mood!! I set up some good atmosphere if I do say so myself!

-----------------

It was that time of year again. That dreaded time of year. That dreadful day. Yet the children were always oblivious to the real dangers of the holiday, they had been told it was just a horror story meant to keep them from trick or treating. But the adults knew the truth. At least, some did. And you were one of them. As a 24 year old, you had lived in this town for most of your life, but the murders had only been happening for the past decade. It was the tenth year in a row, but you wanted to make it the last.

You locked all of your windows at the front of the house, closing the blinds and shutting the curtains. After dimming the lights in the living room, you moved on to the rest of your house. Half the neighborhood had called you crazy year after year, but at least you were alive. Better to be safe than sorry.

You peeked through the blinds of your bedroom window, looking to the right were you could catch a glimpse of the street. Kids in costumes were already patrolling the neighborhood, collecting candy left and right. You pursed your lips as you shut the blinds tightly and yanked the drapery in place. The lights of your bedroom would have to be turned off all the way. As you left your room, you noticed a singular piece of candy on the sofa, across the hall, in the living room.

You didn't remember getting candy recently... You locked your eyes on the wrapped treat, fumbling to your left as you groped around blindly for a weapon. The vase on your nightstand met with your palm, and you gripped the weapon in your hand. Would this year be the year you were actively targeted? Reports of being stalked, and then going missing, were always all over the place on this holiday. Your stomach churned at the thought of a 911 call going on the news with your voice, pleading for help...

No. Not this holiday. You were smarter than everyone else, you were stronger than the rest of the block. Years of labored training
and studying public police reports had prepared you for this moment. Yet, your heart was racing. Your stomach was flipping. Your body was cold sweating. The singular piece of candy on your couch struck fear deep into your soul.

No, not this holiday. You took one step forward, your empty vase at the ready, poised to swing at anything that moved. Another step forward. You were fully in the hallway. You couldn't risk looking away from the candy. Step, after step, after cautious step, you approached the living room with terror in every inch of your body. Closer.... and closer.... and closer...

You stepped into the living room with your hands trembling as you gripped the vase tighter due to your sweaty palms. You could hear the blood rushing in your ears, the deafening silence had you balanced on the edge of a cliff. Step... step... stopped. You leaned closely, peering at the candy. Wait a second. This wasn't candy!

Immediate relief flooded through you as you picked up a cough drop. Now you remembered, your throat had been bothering you that morning, and you must have left a cough drop on the couch by accident. You let out a light chuckle, setting the vase down on the coffee table in front of the couch.

"Y/N, you paranoid dummy." You sighed to yourself, unwrapping the cough drop and popping it into your mouth. What a scare, all for nothing of course. Really, you thought, of all the years to be targeted, this year? Don't get your curtains in a knot, Y/N. Why would he even bother?

You balled up the wrapper and walked to the kitchen, tossing the trash into the bin. What were you doing again? Right- preparing to go out and find the cannibalistic serial killer yourself. You turned back to the living room slowly, fearing the worst, but your house was still the same. No shadow figures, no bloody messages, no intruders. Just your house. A safe place.

But there was no time for playing it safe. It was the tenth Halloween of these twisted games, and you were going to do what the police force could not.

Catch the red devil.
