(Newt's POV)

"'Aye Newt! Little help 'ere!"

The sound of the horn, that tells us when a new greenie is on his way, brought me back to reality. I was just sitting on a small hill with a large oak tree stood tall on the hill. There were also a few colourful flowers placed randomly.

I was staring into oblivion, with back against the tree. The bark was scraping my bare lower back, were my shirt was lifted slightly against the tree. I was thinking deeply, a notebook in one hand and a pencil in the other.

It was my diary. I write in it everyday, it helps me keep calm. Been doing the same since 'the incident'. I'd rather not talk about it, but what I can tell you is that it was a horrible thing and it left me nothing but a limp. It's never been the same since that day...

"Yea, comin'!"

That's when the horn alerted a new greenie was coming. I got off my ass and ran (more like limped...) my way to the box. As did everyone else. The gladers gathered around the box, whispering to one another, when Alby called for my help to open the box.

"Grab the other trapdoor."

"Yep."

I grabbed ahold of the opposite trapdoor to Alby, like he told me to.

"On three. "
"One..."
"Tw-"

"Hurry it up, will ya?"

"Alright sorry. I forgot that you were, second-in-command!"

I was slightly surprised by his outburst , but didn't say anything. Anyway, he still went along with my friendly suggestion.

"Two."
"Three!"

When Alby shouted three, we, together, heaved the box's trapdoors open, which revealed a scared, little greenie.

He was drenched in water, and what I can tell from the smell; sweat. He had dark, maroon eyes, which had a slight spark of fascination and recklessness in them. He also had messy, greasy hair, the colour of chocolate. His hair stuck thoroughly to his forehead. His arms had muscle to them and he had a pointed nose. He has chapped lips and moles spread randomly on his face and neck.

The greenie looks fit enough to be a pretty good runner. That's good, because no one's been applying to be a runner these days and we need some new runners.

"Hey greenie..."

Gally jumped into the box and in front of the greenie.

"Welcome to your new home."

Gally grabbed the boy by his shirt and tugged him up, throwing him to the ground by the box. The gladers created some space.

I roll my eyes. 'Gally was clearly showing off.' The greenie shot up, standing on his feet. His eyes were frantically looking around at the gladers, when finally his eyes locked onto mine. He pauses for a second, but recovers quickly and makes a break for it. Pushing past the others, he sprints across the glade. My eyes widen a fraction.

"We've got a runner!"

I hear Frypan shout beside me. Gladers were shouting along side him, cheering the greenie. Hope blossoms in my chest. I cheer with the others. When, suddenly, the greenie trips and falls flat on his face. Laughter erupted around me. As quick as the new sign of hope was there, it was gone just as quick. I sigh, not being heard by the others as they laughed.

The good news is, 'he's pretty cute...' After a moment, I realise what I thought. I smack myself mentally. 'stupid me! He's not cute...!' I lie to myself.
