I stayed in the pack office later than usual that day. Of course, I had already efficiently completed my work in the early afternoon, but I pretended I didn't so I'd have a good excuse to stay late and begin my search of the archive room. One of my first tasks upon being hired had been to reorganize it, so I had a key along with full reign of the building besides the alpha's and beta's offices.
Regardless of the fact I was allowed in there, I still craved solitude for my arguably insubordinate activities.
Unfortunately for my plans, Beta Nate hadn't gotten the memo that I wanted to be left alone. He was quite good looking in his own right, stereotypically tall, dark and handsome, but I was newly immune to superficially attractive men. They could all go jump off a bridge and rot for all I cared. Especially this one. Beta Nate was reasonably intelligent but extremely inflexible when it came to rules around the pack, even small issues, although he hypocritically turned a blind eye to our alpha's faults. As the Alpha Hudson's best friend I couldn't help but blame him for some of the alpha's behaviour.
"Can I help you with something?" I finally asked him, raising a very unimpressed eyebrow. It was the third time he not-so-casually came by to check what I was doing at my desk. His behaviour was weird, he usually acted like I was beneath his notice unless he needed something, and when he did he was quite direct. Something was up.
It was only the two of us left in the building. My irritation grew.
"Well, I was actually wondering if I could help you with something, since you're working so late," he said, shooting me a boyish grin. It looked weird on his usually serious face. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought he was trying to be charming. "Yeah, no thanks, Beta Nate." Now could you please get lost?
"It's just a shame to see such a pretty wolf working so hard," he said.
Pretty? Compliments weren't part of our normal interactions, when we were forced to have them. And if he'd ever complimented me in the past, it had probably been something like "That was a decent font choice for the presentation, pack member." I pasted an unimpressed smile on my face. It was the best I could manage with what was left of my patience.
He wasn't quite the man-whore that Alpha Hudson was, but that standard wasn't difficult to surpass. Was he hitting on me? "Odd you suddenly noticed that now," I said, deciding not to beat around the bush. I wasn't in the mood to be coy when he was interfering with my plans.
"Oh, I noticed before. I just thought it was a waste of my time."
Until I gave in to the alpha. How flattering.
I crossed my arms and levelled him a hostile stare. I didn't have it in me to pretend to be flattered. "Yeah, I'm still a waste of your time."
"I don't think so. You've really got a sexy strict librarian look going on right now, Jessica."
I gritted my teeth. "I'm pretty sure this falls under workplace sexual harassment, Beta. If we were in the human world..."
"Luckily we're not in the human world. And I'm not harassing you. I just want to get to know you better. It's after hours so I could take you somewhere for supper and we could spend some time together." Translation: I just want to get to know what's in your pants.
I narrowed my eyes. "I'm not interested, and never will be, Beta. I'm sure there's someone else you could better spend your time on."
He pushed away from the wall. "Frigid bitch," he muttered under his breath as he finally headed back to his office.
"And proud of it," I snarled once his footsteps receded. He hadn't even begun to see how frigid I could be.
Finally he passed my desk again with a stiff "goodnight" that likely came through clenched teeth.
