"Thoth, will you please move your head?" Athena asked politely in a low whisper. Teacher June was up at the front of the class pointing at something on the whiteboard.
Thoth moved his head with a quiet, "Pardon me," before all fell quiet again.
I wanted to groan. We had been in this class for what seemed like forever. Dinner could not come soon enough, when I would be able to let my below-average mind have a break from all this learning.
After what seemed like hours, the school bell rang, signaling the end of the learning day. It took all my willpower not to let out a whoop of joy. Last time I had done that I got a talking to about disrupting people's learning.
I grabbed my textbook that was big enough to be a miniature building and ran out the door as fast as I could.
I without even bothering to put my things away in my room first, I made my way to the mess hall and fixed myself up with a large turkey sandwich and mashed potatoes. I sat down at my usual table and began to eat. A few minutes later Thoth and Athena joined me.
"Goodness, Holly," Athena said. "You run to the mess hall as though you'll never see food again."
I shrugged as I took a bite of sandwich. "If it weren't for the bell I wouldn't. Honestly, without that thing the Teachers would never stop teaching."
"Well, it is what they live for, isn't it?" Thoth said around his bologna sandwich.
I sighed, setting down the remains of my sandwich. "I wish it wasn't," I admitted.
If I had said that to anyone else they would freak out. But Thoth and Athena were my best friends. They knew how I felt about the constant learning. They knew I was... different.
"Well," Athena pointed out, "if they didn't teach us, who would be the new Lore Masters? Who would continue to write in the Lore Book?"
Ah, yes, the Lore Book. The book with every event that's ever happened in the world. You may say How would you get everything in the world in one book? How would you collect all that info? Well, the answer to that is simple: the Lore Masters. Once graduated from the teachings of the Learning Place, the students would go out into the world, observe, record, and report. They were called the Lore Masters. They would then all get together once a year and write their findings in the Lore Book, which held so much knowledge and power that the average human mind would literally burn up by reading it. That's why the Masters shared the knowledge with their pupils and each other; so no one would have to suffer that.
I shrugged. "I wish the Lore Book didn't exist either."
"Holly!" Thoth shouted loudly, which brought many looks from those around us. But once they found my face they would return to their meals; I was always different.
"What?" I asked defensively.
"Are you mad?" Athena joined in. "The Lore Book has all the history of the world in it. It's the key to all knowledge and learning!"
"Exactly my point."
They stared at me in shock. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. Even my two best friends thought I was a freak.
I stood, leaving my text book and tray on the table, and returned to my room, locking the door shut before the tears began to roll.
I think the pic looks like Thoth... well, at least the eyes. Imagine the hair lighter and you got it! Forgot to mention last chapter, but the picture there is Athena's eye.
