Chapter 3

"Holly, please come out." Athena knocked on my door, but I refused to open. Maybe I was being a bit dramatic, but I was tired. Tired of learning every waking moment. Tired of trying to make everyone else happy. Tired of being the idiot in the nerd school.

"Please, Holly," Thoth's voice came from the other side of the door. "You have to come out sooner or later."

I rolled my eyes in my pillow. He was right of course, but then again, he always was. "I choose later."

"Come on, Holly," Athena cried loudly. "Please, just talk to us."

I turned my head to face the other side of my bed, which just so happened to be where the wall was.

"If you don't come out, we'll come in!" Thoth shouted. 

I scoffed. In a deep announcer's voice I said, "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we have a doozy! Thoth Jorgensen has broken Expectation #385- No yelling in the corridors- and is threatening to break Expectation #496! Could the Learning Place's prized goodie two-shoes be-" I gasped dramatically- "going bad?"

Athena gasped. "Holly! That's not funny! And the 'No boys in girls' rooms' rule is Expectation #229."

"See, that's it, right there, that make me not want to come out!" I cried angrily. "There's more to life than stuff your brain full of useless information!"

Thoth gasped. "Useless? Holly, the things the Lore Masters teach us here are treasures that will help us in life. Knowledge is power."

"Yeah, and so is electricity, but if electricity has too much power, it can cause a blackout."

I could hear Thoth sigh loudly on the other side of the door. "I hate it when she uses that kind of logic against us."

I could almost imagine Athena nodding in agreement.

"Fine, stay in there, then," Athena called. "We'll see you tomorrow."

I heard their footsteps as they shuffled away.

When I was sure that they had gone, I pushed myself off my bed. I unlocked my door and snuck down the corridor to the stairway.

I needed to get away, if only for an hour. I just couldn't take the constant pressure of not being good enough anymore.

I was going to find a way out of here.
