A/N before we start if the chapter is going to be anything bad I'll put a Tw at the beginning and you can skip anyway carry on!
—————–——————————————————-It was autumn already you had lived with your parents all your life and it had been a good one you all got along great basically best friends more than parents but of course your dumb ass had to get cocky and make a bet that if you graduated you'd go and work with your aunt for a year and if you survived the harsh life if a librarian then you could come home. You making bets was always your downfall even since you were little you just had to much fun doing it and you always pushed yourself to do it so it always ended in you being tired after. It had only been a month since you moved to town you got you own apartment cardboard boxes barely unpacked and already living out of a laundry basket. Only good thing is your aunt was here she was your moms older sister and you two got along well nothing amazing but not a bad relationship. But once grandma died it was like there was no connection anymore you mom moved you away from your aunt and other family to be closer to your dads side it was alright you didn't mind and now you were back to this little town where your aunt lived and never left still taking care of grandpa mom never liked him so makes sense why you never visited. Now you stood alone in your apartment in only a tank top and shorts at 3am making a grilled cheese because you couldn't sleep. All those damn horror movies kept you up and your appetite apparently. Once you had finished making your sad sandwich you sat at the bar counter of your kitchens island on your phone as a few TikTok's played. It was honestly pathetic but it was your home and you didn't wanna go out it was too cold for a walk and with talk of a serial killer who will strike on Halloween kept you inside this October especially because Halloween was only about a week away. You say there mindless scrolling past cosplayers and dancers alike until you turned off your phone and got up to put your now empty plate in the sink. Stuffing your phone into your pocket you turned the kitchen lights off and headed to your room for bed you still had work in the morning.
~~Time skip~~
The morning light had hit your face as your alarm blared in your ears it was definitely to early for this shit but work is money and I have food to buy and clothes to shop for no bills thanks to your parents who would do that for you per deal quota because you didn't pay for college with scholarships for nothing. You paid for collage kinda and they paid for your apartment fair deal. You shook your phone as you turned off your alarm and scolding it for waking you up as you push the warm bed covers off your body and step into the cold wood floor. The loss of warmth sent a chill down your spine so you went to your bathroom towel in hand it was time for a warm shower before work just so I don't smell the books up as my aunt says. After my shower I got dressed into a fun autumn themed outfit and grabbing my bag tied my shoes and left my apartment locking the door as I left. The air had a nip in it and the cool breeze left you wishing to be back at home as you walked to work only good thing was the library was kept warm and had coffee and a small breakfast that your aunt always had for anyone passing by. Your shivers stopped as you entered the big building a long drawn out sigh of relief left you as your body was warm now and your aunt was at the front desk.
"Morning auntie how are you?"
The taller lady looked up from her book and gave me a sweet smile.
"Oh Y/N good morning dear I'm doing quite well how did you sleep?"
I clocked in and walked over to her giving a big hug and grabbed a little pastry she had "made" she bought them from the store and heated them up in the break room same difference to her though. I took a bite wiping the crumbs off my face before speaking.
"Meh it was alright could have been better if my phone didn't get me up!"
We laughed for a few minute's and the room grew still and quiet again it was nice and peaceful. I finished my little pastry and turned to my aunt and asked her with a sigh.
"Kids room for me again? Then file the books on there shelf's?"
She gave a little smile and pinched my cheek.
"You catch on so quickly dear only a month and you already know the ropes."
My aunts hand pulled away from my face and I went over to the kids area like I did every Thursday and asked the small group of kids who came from the school near which book they wanted this week. I had a pile of good books the kids chose at the beginning of the month so that whenever they were here they got to read one of the story's. The kids all in a circle started talking over one another saying all the books at once and the teacher looked worried for a moment until I clapped my hands and the kids did too.
"Hush hush time mean's?"
All in unison the kids cheered in delight.
"Shhhh!"
Small giggles left the kids they really liked the way we did that and well enough it got them to hush so I didn't mind doing it. And one by one I started pointing to the books.
"Raise of hands for book one?"
A few kids hands shot up and then down again as we continue this song and dance and one of the more spooky books got picked spookily the square pumpkin perfect for this month and one of the best ones from childhood. I pulled up the small rocking chair and held the book as I began to read and show the pages to the kids. Many times throughout the book I noticed two kids in the back who looked really interested in the book and would make small comments every now and then and the teacher would hush them I didn't mind though. And once the book was done the kids all got up and ready to leave as my aunt hands them all little bags with candy corn and sweets as she did all of October she had always liked the more simple things in life like making kids smile close to Halloween and don't get me started on Christmas I dreaded decorating for Halloween i know I'll hate Christmas because there was a tall ass tree she had in storage. The teacher walked up to me and thanked me again for reading to the kids and making them hush for more than 10 minutes. It wasn't a problem I always got along with kids I guess being the only child made me like them more because I had always wanted someone to take care of other than myself. Mother had tried to have more kids after me but she failed several times so she stopped but I did have pets and toys to keep my company so I wasn't too bad off. And once all went quite again I took the cart by the front desk and started to push it around putting books in there correct order. And grabbed the list of ones to take for online pick ups a few cook books and an occult book interesting the cook books were easy enough to get too but the occult one was higher up so I had to get onto the old ladder and get it. And just as I got it the damn thing broke and I fell closing my eye for the impact of the floor and bracing for impact I was surprised when it didn't come. Instead I fell but landed on something warm I open my eyes to be in the arms of a bigger man tired eyes and a warn smile as he looks at me and a kinda deep southern accent leaves his voice.
"Careful there sweetheart you might get hurt. Wouldn't want a sweet thing like you hurting yourself now would ya?"
I held the book close to me as I gave a sudden yelp when the man put me down my cheeks flushed a bright pink I could just feel it not everyday a man saves your ass literally from the floor and then flatters you. I pushed a strand of hair from my face and shyly spoke.
"Oh well I guess not thank you sir I-I'll try and be more careful next time."
He glacéd at the book your held to your chest then looking back at your face he gave a smile and ruffled your hair.
"Sir is so formal call me bob and no problem kid but I won't always be here to catch you when you fall darlin."
You simply nodded your head to embarrassed to move then man walked off. A broken ladder still lay on the floor after you unglue that man from your mind bob was his name he had some charm to him that's for sure. Messy black hair deep eyes and rounded figure but definitely looked fit. Mentally cursing yourself you pick up the broken ladder and walk back to the front desk just in time to see a few cops pull up a clearly older one puts out a cigarette before entering. You wave at the two and look at there name tags Jack and John the towns most perfect cop duo. The older one spoke up as the case closer.
"Hello young lady in here to pick up a book I should be on the list."
I nodded and went over to the computer and looked at the list and saw officers John had checked out the occult book I was holding guess all that trouble wasn't for nothing. I stamped his book and handed it to him.
"Here you are officer this is good till December 3 hope to see you again."
With that I waved them off and plopped my head down on the desk a long rest of my day awaited. By closing time you had been bored all the books were in order and everything smelt like an old book your aunt had come over to you and tapped your shoulder as your face was down on the desk.
"Y/N dear you can get your things and leave shifts over I'll lock up tonight."
You shot up half asleep and looked at your aunt and put a thumbs up.
"Yep got it auntie."
You stretched out and got up grabbing your phone and bag it was already sunset and you were getting hungry after eating nothing but pastry's you needed a meal. On your way home the wind had picked up and it was even colder leaves scattered about on the concrete as you walked crunching a few under you. It was so nice out you took a walk around this quiet kitty town some memories of it in your head from past holidays with your grandma and your aunt you were lost in your head for the most part till the street lights turned on. You saw how dark it had gotten which made you even more cold. When your exhaled you could see your breath so you made your way home stopping for a minute looking down a dark ally you could have sworn you saw someone move in the shadows. Figuring it was just a cat you continued on not realizing you were being followed. Once you made it to your apartment you swung open the door throwing off your shoes and going to the couch to plop face first grabbed the tv remote and turning on the tv before getting up to make dinner.
