Peter and Rose-Mary sat in front of the warm beguiling fire whispering sweet nothings in each other’s ears. The recently married couple, although young have been trying for a baby without success. Peter worked hard all of his life and was quite wealthy. He had enough to support himself his wife and a few children, yet a sad fact has come about and that was the fact that Rose was unfortunately sterile. Countless nights she has cried and prayed, yet those same prayers remained unanswered.
Peter a handsome man with his raven black hair and blazing lapis lazuli blue eyes, looked at his beautiful wife now and didn’t see her being sterile as a problem. He would never think any less of her because he loved her with all of his being and he would never stop, his heart belonged to her no matter the situation. Her being sterile was an obstacle that they could get through, they filled out countless adoption papers and now it was just a long wait.
He looked into her beautiful grey smoldering eyes and brushed the flames of her bright red hair from them. Minutes or hours could have passed as he got lost in the never ending pools of her eyes.
A faint knock pulled him from his mesmerized state. Rose stood to answer it pecking his cheek with the faintest hint of a kiss which in turn made him blush with pride and love for his little beauty, he smiled as she walked away watching her hips sway as she moved, God he loved that woman. She opened the door and gasped immediately dropping to her knees at what she saw. Peter stood quickly and strode over to the door concern etched into every line of his handsome face as he reached her placing a hand over her shoulder to see what had her in such a state. He drew closer and his eyes widened in amazement. There on the front porch was a wide eyed infant wrapped tightly in a velvet blanket. He quickly knelt down and picked the child up from the basket, Rose-Mary grabbing the basket in awe as she swiftly followed behind him. Fearful for the child’s health Peter grabbed a few more blankets from a nearby closet and wrapped the baby up, and came closer to the fire he rocked the little beauty in his arms and rubbed her back trying to warm her up. She immediately began to coo up at him with wide innocent eyes her lips forming a slight ‘o’ as she blew bubbles with her spittle.
He looked to Rosie who was still watching in awe as she watched him move, her eyes were wide in wonderment and adoration. She had fallen in love for the second time of her life the first was Peter and now this little being who she was hoping was meant for her.
“Rosie check the basket for any information.” He urged her watching her with careful eyes; he did not want her to get her hopes up just to be let down. She checked the basket carefully unfolding each item with care and precision, she didn’t want to miss anything. She was shocked at what she found; in the hand woven basket were two more velvet blankets a few beautifully stitched gowns, a few jewels and an envelope. She stood the envelope in hand and opened it gently as not to mar it. Inside were two pages one was a letter it read:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Harris, I must tell you first that this is not just a gift of life but a gift of love, for I hope that you love my child as I have. I have not given you this child out of kindness but out of protection, I left my daughter with you because I felt that you would both protect her with your lives. As rude as it may sound I would never have given her to you if her life was not in great danger. With that said I grant you permission to sign the birth certificate with your names making my daughter Catalina Evalynn Harris. Just know that if you do not protect with all you have you will pay dearly. As I am her mother I must be stern as to the way you bring her up. I will send my informants to you and you will follow there instructions. I do hope I have made the right decision in choosing you. Another thing I do not want you to think that I do not love her because I do, more than you will ever know. Now with everything said let it be known that you shall not tell my daughter of this letter until her 18th birthday, take care of her Rose for I know how you have longed to be a mother. As for you Peter I know you will make a wonderful father keep her safe
Sincerely, S.B.
With everything in the letter Rosie felt feint so she sat on the couch, Peter following. She looked at him with wide eyes unshed tear shining in them.
“What’s wrong my love?” he questioned, she just stared at him and giggled happily, he handed her the child and immediately felt the cold air hit his chest even though the room was warm with the fire burning brightly, taking the letter from her and began to read. The baby looked deeply into Rosie’s eyes and cooed at her, her soulful green eyes had her captivated and she cooed back, she had already fallen for the babe and she was sure that Peter had also. Just then he looked up from the letter in awe and amazement he looked at Rosie with love and then he looked at the little babe known as Catalina with the same adoration and love. They both knew what had to be done they took the birth certificate and filled it out without another thought.
“Oh, Peter our prayers have been answered, we have a complete family now.” She murmured her voice full of compassion and love as she handed the baby back almost unwillingly. They sat there and knew in their hearts that this was right, that this was meant to be. He looked at his wife and smiled as he saw he whispering sweetly to the babe, This is the beginning, he thought this was all we had wished for and now it coming true. Peter smiled as he sat next to his wife and new daughter, he pulled them both close cooing at the babe as well. This was their life now, their amazing and wonderful life. They sat together all through the night drifting off into a peaceful sleep, little Catalina falling asleep on Peters chest, while rose was tucked tightly under his arm.
The letter and basket were both forgotten for now. A new family was made, and they slept, unaware of tears being shed else ware, of pain so deep that nothing could bring her out. A mother, a goddess, who had to give up her daughter to protect her. The tears came mercilessly to her. Yet deep down she knew her daughter was safe… for now.
