The office smelled of paper and burnt coffee. The windows were wide open, allowing the sun to enter. Giving the employees a view of the city from the twelvith floor. My office was in the corner, glass blocking anyone from just entering. It was a decent size with pictures and articles hanging off the walls. My desk was a mess with papers everywhere. Pens and pencils scattered around. In my pencil cup was colored pencils. They were helpful when my highlighters went missing. Everyone was hussling around, trying to get their articles in before the day was over. I was sitting at my desk, typing away at my computer. My glasses were sliding off my face. Using my index finger, I pushed them back up and kept going.
A knock came to the door. I glanced up. Charlotte, my assistant, stood there with two cups of coffee. She smiled at me. She wore her favorite cream shirt with a black slip bow that hung around her neck. Her black knee high skirt was wrinkle free. She tip toed over to me. "Here's your double expresso latte, extra cream." She went to leave.
"Can you stay for a minute?" I asked, looking away from the computer. She nodded and shut my glass door. She walked back over and sat in her chair. She loved sitting in the one closest to the wall. Her eyes glanced at her stack of papers. "Something on your mind?"
I sighed and removed my glasses. "Roger wants this big story finished before midnight tonight. I might crash before then."
She frowned. "Long night?"
Shaking my head, "No. Just him ranting to me all week about this offer still being on the table." My mind could still hear his words racing around.
Charlotte rolled her eyes. "Please. His son is no prize."
I held my hands together. "The issue is, John got me the job here. Roger saw how much of a hard worker I was. I couldn't deal with him anymore. John is lazy, wasteful, and doesn't care about anyone but himself."
She sipped her coffee. "You never told me what the offer was. Or is it still top secret?"
I bit my lip, glancing down at my messy desk. "Roger said, if I marry John. Not only will I have a successful relationship, meaning secured with money. He would also hand over the company to me when he died."
Charlotte's mouth dropped. Her hand slowly opened up, almost spilling her coffee. "HE OFFERED THE WHOLE COMPANY?!" I waved my hands, shushing her. My eyes looked out of the glass. Everyone was still working, not paying attention. I sighed. They probably already knew what was going on between me and our boss. "Yes. But I'm turning him down."
She quickly shook her head. "Look, even if John is a piece of shit. You could run this place. You are a valuable employee who gets the job done. And knows how to meet deadlines." I smiled. She knew how much of a hard worker I was. Everyone always came to me for questions and advice. When I first took this job, I thought it was silly. Never thought that I had a strong skill set for newspaper articles. Another knock came to the door, it opened. A man stuck his head in. "Roger is looking for you." Charlotte eased up out of her seat, then snuck out of the room. Groaning, I stood up and followed him to Roger's office. We went down the hallway towards the double doors. Lots of thoughts crossed my mind on why he wanted to see me. The guy went up to the door and knocked three times. "Yeah, yeah. Come in." The guy quickly scurried away. I sighed. He was in a good mood, I thought sarcastically.
My hand grabbed the handle and slowly opened it up. Peaking my head inside, Roger was sitting at his desk. Puffing on a vape pen. He was a middle aged man. He was already starting to look old and grow grey hair. His suspenders showed on his white plain shirt. His office was surrounded by glass. He even had two corners where the floor was just glass. Most of the room was dark except for the windows. His desk was neat and tidy. His eyes beamed at me. "Where the hell is the story of the homeless millionare?"
