The last few minutes of the school day seemed to drag out–the teacher's lips looked like they moved in slow-mo.
Meadow Caesar, the Queen Bee of Caesar Falls, tapped her pencil, seeming to be annoyed.
Her gaze wandered to a boy with red hair who seemed to be antsy to get out too–way too antsy; Meadow found that intriguing.
Finally, after what felt like a century, the bell rang and the teacher said, "Class dismissed."; Even that had been drug out.
As all of the kids rushed out, Meadow slunk back, observing the red haired boy.
He got up, headed out of the classroom, and toward his locker.
Meadow approached and said, "Hey."
The boy looked slightly alarmed that she was speaking to him.
"Conley, right? You're one of my brother's friends," Meadow began to say. Her brother, Cultyn, was seemingly good friends with this Conley kid and some kid named Kurazak or something.
"Yeah," the boy started to say in response. "It's Conley. F-"
Meadow closed her eyes, saying, "No, no. Don't tell me. I'll get it." She hummed a little as she thought before opening her brown eyes and exclaiming, "Freddie!"
"Fred," he corrected.
"Same thing," Meadow responded.
Fred huffed, sounding frustrated. "Not really."
"Anyway," the girl began, "I'm-"
"I already know who you are," Fred started. "You're Meadow Caesar. Your daddy owns the town. You get everything you want handed to you on a silver platter. You're spoiled. Everyone bows to you." He paused before continuing, "Yeah, I know who you are."
Meadow clenched her jaw for a short moment before relaxing it and swallowing. I am not a brat, she thought to herself. Her eyes wandered to the inside of Fred's locker. "What's that?" She then asked, about a necklace, that had a glowing red tone and a symbol engraved into it.
Fred swiftly grabbed the necklace up. "Nothing!" He exclaimed. He then slammed the locker door in Meadow's face and stormed off.
Meadow blinked a couple of times before reaching toward her own pendent and fidgeted with it. Her pendant was on a gold chain with a blue glowing tone and symbol.
That Fred kid was hiding something and she needed to figure it out.
Meadow pressed onward. She stopped around the corner of a pillar when she reached the outside of the school building. She peered around it.
Right there was Fred. He was doing something on his phone. Was he scanning something?
As Meadow squint her eyes a little, she tried to get a closer look at the phone.
No. That sure as hell wasn't a phone.
Fred continued onward through the Delaware town.
And of course, Meadow followed.
Where he went, she went as well.
Meadow followed Fred around town for hours.
Finally Fred reached the landfill near the dockyard.
Old, broken ships bobbed up in down in the serene waves.
The setting sun flushed out red, orange, and purple light across the sky and sea.
Fred headed a little farther onto on of the docks.
Fred was still holding the device up to different areas–scanning, just scanning.
As Meadow stepped forward, her shoe came down a twig, which promptly made a snapping sound.
Fred stopped in his tracks, swallowed, and turned around. He sighed when he saw who it was. "Really? You again?"
Meadow approached Fred. "I wanna know more about the pendant. I h-"
A crackling noise filled the air.
Both Fred and Meadow stiffened, holding their breath.
Dark fog crept through the dockyard, obsuring the last slimmers of sunlight there was.
The dock below the two started to splinter–more and more and more.
The dock collapsed and Fred and Meadow plunged into the sea.
Fred was struggling to keep his head above the water, so Meadow swam over toward him, trying to tug him over to land.
Once the two reached the beach, Fred stood alongside Meadow.
Fred spit out salt water. "Thanks." He coughed.
"What's the device?" Meadow asked.
Fred sighed, holding up the smoking device. "It was supposed to track those things-"
"What things?" Meadow questioned.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you," Fred said to her.
"Try me," Meadow said in response.
"They're what we call specters...Part of Death's kingdom alongside the wraiths and reapers," Fred said, nervous about showing the paranormal world to a supposed 'outsider'.
"Specters? Like the Bogeyman?" Meadow questioned.
"No. Not at all. The Specters are sort of like Death's servants maybe," Fred said.
"So when you say Death, you mean as in the Horseman one?" Meadow raised an eyebrow.
Fred swallowed. "Yeah. That's exactly what I mean." His gaze drifted downward and fell upon Meadow's pendant. "Huh," he began.
Meadow hadn't realized her pendant was dangling out. She went to move it.
"No, don't hide it," Fred said with a raised hand.
Meadow stopped.
"May I?" Fred inquired.
Meadow nodded before slipping it off and placing it Fred's open palm.
Fred examined it. He ran his finger over the grooves of the symbol etched into it. He laughed a little. "Michael."
"Excuse me?" Meadow questioned.
"That's not important right now." Fred handed the pendant back to her.
Meadow placed it back around her neck.
"We just need to get out of here. That's what's important." Fred grabbed her hand and led her down the beach–running to where he'd find the submarine.
