I jolted awake, my parents had once again woken me up to their pointless arguments, always getting worked up over such stupid nonsense. It was 9:00 am, Saturday which means no school. And today was a special day, I would be going on a camping trip with my friends! Finally a distraction from school and life. I slowly lifted my hand up to grab my phone, then checked to see if my friends texted, then got up to begin my day of fun distractions, friends, and no hellish school.
Finally, after what felt like hours, I heard my dad yell something about being late, then slamming what sounded like the garage door. Now I could pack what I needed in peace. I got the biggest camping backpack in my house the night before, and got informed that my friend Katie, would not be able to bring her tent, so I would need to pack a tent meant for two people, since Katie would be bringing mostly fishing supplies and other essentials she needed. I sighed, set the backpack out, and began to pack.
I needed most essential things for a camping trip, a tent, food and water, a weapon just in case, medical supplies, a flashlight, and extra clothes. For the weapon, I got one of my mom's kitchen knives, (in the night so she wouldn't know of course.) For the tent I just packed our newest two-person tent, and packed all my comfiest yet sturdy clothes. For the flashlight and medical supplies, I just went down to the o local camping store and picked it up.And for snacks, Got all the common pantry items, and made sure it was enough for three Highschool girls. I sighed contently as I zipped up the backpack, then went down in the kitchen.
"Hey good morning mom!" I yelled as I came down the stair case, setting my backpack aside and going into the kitchen. "What do you want?" She snapped at me, jolting her head in my direction, then tiredly letting her gaze drift pack to the counter. "N-nothing I'm just getting food so I can get out of your hair and so on that camping trip with my friends." I mumbled. "Friends? You have friends?" She asked, perhaps she hadn't gotten much sleep or...maybe drank to much last night. I thought, then finally after a good 2 minutes went to go get what was left of the cereal, than go meet my friends.
"What was all that fighting about?" I asked nervously, going to sit down with my cereal and attempt communication with my very tired mother. "Oh you mean your dad? He blamed me for not setting his alarm and yelled at me for ten minutes straight." She hissed, still sounding angry with me despite saying anything to trigger her. "Oh...well doesn't he have a business trip this weekend? So you'll get to have some alone time..." I murmured, than continued to eat my cereal. (YALL DONT WORRY SHE PUTS CEREAL BEFORE MILK LIKE A GOOD HUMAN BEING WOULD SO YAY-)
" My friends should be here any minute." I said after a good five minutes of silence, then quickly washed out the cereal bowl and put it in the dishwasher. "Good. I can finally be in peace without getting bothered or getting yelled at." She grumbled, and slight guilt running down my spine, almost as if I felt like she actually meant that I was annoying to her, despite me getting decent grades and being almost ready to go into college. I nodded her off, grabbed the heavy backpack and went to go outside to wait for my dear friends.
It was already starting to look like fall, the leaves slowly turning their autumn colors, despite it only being the 6th of September. It would be cold in the mountains, but do to the fronts that had bean coming in, if we did any fishing the fish would be hungry, or perhaps we could explore the "haunted" lab ruins. I thought, almost zoning out till I heard a car horn and my friends yelling my name. They were finally here.
" Casey!" I heard my friend Chelsea yell, and my friend Katie not far behind. " Hey guys!" I yelled back! Then ran over to them. "You guys excited to go camping?" I asked enthusiastically. "As Long as their is internet!" Katie said. "Well, i suppose you can use apps that don't require internet..." I mumbled. "THERE ISNT INTERNET?!?" Katie cried. "Pffft yea I'm sure the squirrels will give us the Wi-Fi." Me and Chelsea said, laughing. "But hey, we are gonna explore some spooky ruins and go fishing!" I said. "Ugh. Fine." Katie mumbled, and then we began to walk towards the bus stop.
After about a 15 minutes walk and lots of conversation and gossip, the bus station was in view. "OH MY GOD THE BUS IS GONNA LEAVE IN LIKE 30 SECONDS!" Katie cried, and began sprinting towards the station, of which me and Chelsea quickly sprinted after her. We quickly got on the bus, scanned in our tickets and ran to the nearest three seats, barely sitting down quick enough before the bus began to move.
"How long does it take to get to the mountains?" Katie asked, immediately pulling her phone out to use what bit of Wi-Fi there was left. "It's about 30 minutes." I replied. Katie sighed heavily and sank into her seat, swiping through what appeared to be instagram. "Why not enjoy the majestic ride?" Chelsea joked, of which Katie gave her a quick annoyed glance and continued to stare at her phone.
The mountains twisted and curled in an array of majestic light and dark greens, and all the amazing fall colors looked almost unreal. "I got us a special campsite right by the haunted ruins." I snickered mischievously. "Really? No one tried to claim it before?" Chelsea questioned. "Maybe it really is haunted." Katie mumbled. "Well, we're here now!" I said, getting up as the bus slowly came to a stop, the stairs hissing down and groups of people chatting and leaving the bus.
"My god it's cold up here!" Katie cried, clutching her arms and shivering. "Oh don't overreact it's a whole 20 degrees." Chelsea laughed. "Alright...we have to hike for another 15 minutes up that trail over there." I said, pointing to a rather dark and menacing pathway going up a long hill. Katie gulped. "You-you sure that's the right one?" She asked nervously. "Yea, I'm sure." I said, than slowly began to head towards the direction of the dark, spooky, menacing pathway, my friends close behind.
After what felt like hours, we had finally made it to the campsite. "Man it looks like no one have ever been up here." Chelsea observed, looking around at the overgrown vegetation , leaves on the ground, and cracks in the fire place. "So you really got it next to those freaky ruins?" Katie murmured, staring at the gigantic expansive ruins in the close distance. "Yeah. It's pretty early so I say we go look at the ruins, after that fish a bit, then set up our campsite." I said, taking my bag off and getting some of the snacks out. "But let's eat first." "Oh my god yes!" Chelsea said, helping herself to the snacks I brought.
"Alright... it's bean like an hour." I said, grabbing my bag and slowly getting up. "Time flies when your talking about your sleep paralysis demon." Chelsea said. "Well, we should get towards the ruins." I said, and began to walk towards the ruins. "Is it just me or are the flowers wilting?" Katie said, glancing around to see that the closer we got to the ruins, the more the plants died. "It's probably a chemical leak. So let's just be careful." Chelsea said, than finally, we had arrived. It was GIGANTIC and the sense of unease already sinking in. "Uh maybe we should g-" Katie started, but we had already gone in.
"It's so creepy in here." Katie murmured nervously. "Kinda is." I mumbled back, flicking on a flashlight and shining it around. By the looks of it, this was some kind of testing room as broken test tubes were scattered around, and a bed with restrain straps was next to a wall. "Any idea what caused the lab to be abandoned?" Chelsea asked, glancing around nervously at the lab equipment. "Yeaaaa that's enough for me...I think we should go." Katie should. "That sounds gre-" I started, turning towards the exit. But just as I had identified the door, my flash light went out, leaving us in darkness.
"OK THATS IT" Katie said panickedly, then began to search around for any light. The sense of unease was now very noticeable, and even the bats from the ceiling stopped chirping. But just as I was ready to let the panic take over, I saw a faint light in the distance, a window maybe? "Hey guys I think I see something." I said, slowly walking towards the faint light, oh which my friends followed and staggered behind me. It was a window, a faint buzzing noise and yellow light radiating from it. "I'll go first." I said, slowly opening the window and beginning to climb through it. Then I realized I had made the worst choice in my life. "CASEY N-" I heard behind me, then fell a good 10 feet and hit a wet cold floor, slowly got up groaning and froze. This wasn't outside. This was level 0 of the backrooms.
