The whistle blows, sharp and sudden, and just like that, we're off — dashing between the trees, weaving through undergrowth, our eyes scanning for defenders.
Jake, Heejin and I stick to the edge of the play zone, hoping to sneak into enemy territory unnoticed.
"There's nobody on this side," Jake whispers, glancing left and right.
"Isn't that... suspicious?" Heejin mutters, frowning.
Jake just shrugs, and we keep going, our steps getting lighter, quieter.
Suddenly, through the leaves, I spot something bright orange sticking out of a bush. I freeze and point. Jake's eyes widen. Heejin leans forward. We hurry over, trying to stay low.
I bend down and reach for it — almost got it — but then crack.
A branch snaps behind us.
We whip our heads around.
"Get ready to run," Jake murmurs, crouching slightly.
The object — a foam baton painted orange — is too deep. I push my arm farther into the bush, ignoring the sharp twigs.
Another crack — closer this time.
"Almost... there!" I grab it, yanking my arm out just as someone shouts from the trees.
"GO!" I yell, and the three of us bolt.
Behind me, I hear the unmistakable sound of fast footsteps chasing us — and someone shouting.
"Dahee! Don't stop!" Jake yells.
I risk a glance. Sunghoon is catching up to me fast, with Jangmi just behind him.
Oh no.
A branch hits me in the forehead and I stumble, my feet tangling. I fall hard onto the damp ground. A second later — thud — Sunghoon trips over the same branch and crashes right next to me.
"Dahee, we're coming! Hold it tight!" Heejin screams from behind.
I curl into a ball, clutching the object tight against my stomach, shielding it with my arms as Sunghoon reaches for it, laughing breathlessly.
"Come on! Give it to me!" he says between chuckles, trying to pull at it gently.
"Never!" I say, holding on tighter.
He's not really fighting hard — more like testing me — and in that moment, Heejin and Jake arrive. I spring up just long enough to toss the object to Heejin.
"Go!" I yell.
They take off. I collapse again, chest heaving.
Sunghoon lies next to me, also out of breath, smiling at the sky.
"I didn't know you could run that fast."
"I'm full of surprises," I say, smirking and raising an eyebrow.
He turns his head. "You okay? That fall looked rough."
"I'm good. You?"
"Fine, except for being covered in dirt. Guess we'll need a shower before lunch."
We laugh and get up. I brush off my knees and offer him a hand. He takes it, and we pull each other upright.
"Let's go see if I just won the game," I tease, nudging his arm.
He nudges me back, rolling his eyes playfully.

Back at the base, everyone's gathering again.
