Ash
Arriving home from school, he passed by his mothers sitting together on his way to his room.
"Ash!" called his alpha mother, "Come back here now."
Perplexed, he spun around, walking to the mahogany table and taking a seat in front of her.
"Come closer," she hissed as she leaned in to smell his neck.
A serious expression befell her.
"Mother?"
She didn't answer him.
His beta mother was also worried. "Lauren?"
His alpha mother snapped back to earth and stroked her partner's hand in comfort.
She inhaled deeply. "You've differentiated."
His eyes widened, and his mind started to race. If he could be smelled by an alpha, he had to be either an alpha or an omega. The chances were much more likely for him to be an alpha.
He opened his mouth, then closed it again. The question died on his tongue. What if he was not an alpha? If they turned out to be right all along, what would he do then? The fear was paralysing.
His alpha mother's eyes started to water, devastated staring right back at him. Never, not once, had he seen her cry. He knew the answer without even asking.
Against all odds, somehow the universe was playing a cruel trick on him.
Why now, of all times? How would he face Rosia? When she found out he was an omega all along, she would definitely comfort him. But what if she smelled his pheromones? Would she start to dislike him if she was forced to act against her will?
He shuddered. Ash sent a message to her, telling her he was sick and would need to be alone for the next two days so he wouldn't pass it to her. Then, he booked at appointment with the clinic.
"Congratulations, you're an omega," the doctor smiled as he handed back the test results. "I've prescribed you some inhibitors so please remember to always keep them on you and take them when you get your heats. They might start off irregular at first but will stabilise over time, which will make things easier."
Static was blaring in his ears.
"You should also use some neutralising spray or patches. Personally, I recommend this brand, it's discreet and looks identical to a bottle of perfume."
When he saw the familiar design on the bottle, his heart dropped. How long had she known? She gave him that spray over a month ago, after she stopped avoiding him. So this was the secret she was hiding. She knew he was omega, and probably got sick of smelling him.
He grinded his teeth. Was he really so unpleasant? She was the only alpha in his life other than his mother, and the only partner he had ever considered accepting.
But all along, she had only seen him as a cute small animal that needed her protection. But now that he had differentiated, she still only seemed to like him less. It was a hopeless love. And finally, his secondary gender had destroyed everything.
He truly hated being an omega.

Ambrosia
All this time she had loved being an alpha, because it meant she could protect what was most important.
But now that her pheromones threatened to drive away that same most important person, she thought for the first time:
I hate being an alpha, but I would walk down this same painful path all over again if it meant protecting your smile.
