I was sitting on the bed with my back against the wall. I didn't let my despondency get the better of me. I had to keep my wits about me. I'd been locked in my cabin until the Galatea was on the high seas, to keep me from jumping into the water one more time.
The hours passed. I could hear footsteps and chattering outside on the deck. Someone even began to sing. I never admitted to myself that I was trapped. I kept telling myself that I would escape, that I would never see those faces again, especially Arenis'. I hated everyone for doing this to me. My throat felt dry and there was an acrid taste in my mouth. I cried in anger, suddenly aware of what the whole situation meant. I tried to hold back the moan of pain that constricted my throat. Mine was a soft, uninterrupted cry. A cry from the heart and mind. Tears of resentment and anguish flowed from my eyes. Outside the porthole, I saw nothing but water.
I spent two days locked in my cabin. No one came to disturb me; it seemed as if they had forgotten my presence. I was not even offered any food, so that at dinnertime on the second day, I surrendered out of hunger.
It was Dilthey who first spotted me. "You took your time!" He came toward me, laid a hand on my shoulder in comfort, but I quickly shoved it away.
"I need to eat," I informed him.
"I guess! I'll go and inform the Captain that you've come out. She'll be glad to hear that!"
"Dilthey, please. I need to eat."
He nodded, his eyes going wide at seeing me so desperate. "Sure... I'll get you something right away."
When I saw him disappear below deck, I knew I'd given up.
