*peter and serena are 17 and 18
~you are reading part 2
~homecoming went well. really well. (lowercase intended)

Things haven't been quite the same
There's a haze on the horizon, babe
It's only been a couple of days
And I miss you, mm, yeah
When nothin' really goes to plan
You stub your toe or break your camera
I'll do everythin' I can
To help you through

homecoming was amazing. serena didn't think she would enjoy her senior homecoming so much, the excitement died down a little once she realized she would have a prom later on. but peter made it worthwhile.

he picked serena up from her parents (sam wilson and maria hill) apartment, an apartment a short 10-minute car ride away from peter's.

If you're feelin' down
I just wanna make you happier, baby
Wish I was around
I just wanna make you happier, baby

serena had been having a bad day. her dress was the wrong color and the hair salon decided to close early. to add icing on the cake, her father was on a mission longer than he thought he would be, meaning he wouldn't be able to see her off to her last hoco. peter picked up on it.

throughout the car ride, he used cheesy science puns and showed her wholesome tiktoks. he asked serena about the classes they didn't share, and he recalled hilarious moments from the classes they did. he couldn't stand seeing her upset, she was usually so bright and cheery. slowly, serena's mood changed.

peter was the most chivalrous person serena had ever met. he held the door open for her, constantly checked up on her throughout the night, and even escorted her to the bathroom, despite her protests.

"are you feeling better?" peter asked as they slow danced.

"yeah, i think so. thank you, peter." serena said to him.

he smiled. "of course. you deserve the world."

"how do you know that?"

"just a feeling."

serena looked at him, eyes wide and cheeks hot. they didn't turn red of course, but her smile gave it all away.

"what? what are you thinking about?" peter asked.

serena didn't know how to put it in words, so she did the only thing that made sense; the only thing that felt right.

she kissed him.

We've been doin' all this late night talkin'
'Bout anythin' you want until the mornin'
Now you're in my life
I can't get you off my mind

two weeks later...

ah, the honeymoon stage of a relationship. sam often complained about serena keeping him up all hours of the night.

"the walls in this apartment are thin, hon. tell that peter kid to go to sleep for once."

serena would smile and laugh, promising to try and keep the noise to a minimum. but every night when that name would pop up on her phone screen, she swiped the call button immediately.

"hey." peter would say

"hi." serena would reply.

their calls were never about anything specific. they would rant about teachers that annoyed them, talk about baseball (something serena was passionate about, whereas peter could have cared less), the news, social media, celebrities they loved, hated, and loved to hate. they just enjoyed each other's presence.

serena was always the first to fall asleep, and peter would sit and stare for a while. "how could someone so perfect choose to be with me?" he would ask himself.

I've never been a fan of change
But I'd follow you to any place
If it's Hollywood or Bishopsgate
I'm coming too

two months later...

"what colleges are you applying to?"

peter and serena sat in the school library. peter was on his laptop going through college applications. MIT was his dream school of course, but it never hurt to have backups.

"none at this moment. i think i'm taking a gap year."

"why?"

"i'm not fully convinced college is in the cards for me. why should i spend another four years in a classroom to 'find myself' when i could do it out there, all across the world?"

peter nodded. "where would you go first?"

serena pondered the question for a bit, fiddling with the pencil in her hand.

"the beach."

If you're feelin' down
I just wanna make you happier, baby
Wish I was around
I just wanna make you happier, baby

We've been doin' all this late night talkin'
'Bout anythin' you want until the mornin'
Now you're in my life
I can't get you off my mind

it seemed like serena's every waking moment was plagued by him. the text messages she woke up to every morning, the phone calls they shared every night.

"when are we meeting this kid?" her mother, maria hill, would often ask.

"soon, mom. soon."

"it better be soon." her father, sam wilson, would say.

serena wasn't ready for peter to meet her parents. she worried what would happen if her parents didn't like peter. she wasn't in love, of course, she just really liked him.

she wanted them to continue existing in their own little bubble, where they weren't affected by the opinions of others. what happens when that bubble bursts? how will it affect them? their relationship?

Can't get you off my mind
Can't get you off my mind (can't get you off my mind)
I won't even try (I won't even try)
To get you off my mind (get you off my mind)

We've been doin' all this late night talkin'
'Bout anythin' you want until the mornin'
Now you're in my life
I can't get you off my mind

even still, serena and peter continued. they spent their nights talking about anything and everything, spent their days attached at the hip. needless to say, *they couldn't get each other of their minds*

Can't get you off my mind (all this late night talkin')
Can't get you off my mind (all this late night talkin')
I won't even try (all this late night talkin')
Can't get you off myAll* *this late night talkin'
