Rugby tryouts.
The one sport each year this school is most hyped about for competitions.
Or so I was told.
There was a week until tryouts began, and so many people were trying out for the boys and girls teams. Normally it'd just be the first years attending, but it looked like there were some from all years; even some fourth years, believe it or not.
"Are you trying out for the team, Jamie?" Hunter said, walking towards me in the hallway in front of the sign up sheet.
"Sure am. And you?" I replied.
"Already have my name up there. See? First name on top of the list." He said, pointing to his name.
"Oh yea I see it," I said, "Hey do you know what we should be expecting for tryouts?"
"Oh, yeah. It'll be three hours total. The first hour is for speed and stamina, the second is for physical strength, and the last hour is for technique." He said, leaning on the wall beside me with his arms crossed. "Just don't get too sad when I obliterate you in the tryouts, yeah?"
"You wish!" I said, putting down the pen I used to sign my name.
"Anyway, I've gotta get to class," Hunter said, "Catch you after school? I met some of the rugby team and it'd be cool if you met them. Y'know, if we both make the team n' all."
"Yeah, sure. I'd love to go." I replied.
"Sweet! We're going to the arcade later, but everyone's meeting up in front of the school gates before we head out." He said.
"Okay, see you then." I said, picking up my bag.
"Yeah, see you then." Hunter said, lifting his hand up and ruffling my hair, like he did the day we reunited.
After he left, I started to walk to my class. My face felt warm, but why? He's my friend, I shouldn't be blushing because he touched my hair, right?
I'm making a big deal over something so small, but why? Am I really falling for my best friend? I doubt it, but still, I shouldn't be overthinking it; he wouldn't like me that way anyway.
I continue to walk, trying not to hit anyone passing by; I wouldn't want to make a scene, it would be too much work to deal with, and I'm not good with talking to people I don't know anyway.
Soon enough, class was out for the day. It went by quickly, but it also felt like it took so long for classes to be over. I grabbed my dark brown bag from the back of my seat and started to put my textbooks into it. I heard chatter from teachers and other classmates; things like what they'd do once they got home or the plans they had for the following weekend. As I walk out of the classroom, I see my sister Dani walking with a boy. Maybe he was one of her classmates? They seemed pretty close to just being classmates though.
"Oh hey Jamie! I won't be home until later, I'm going over to a friends' house tonight, is that okay?" Dani asked, walking towards me.
"Oh, yea it's okay. I'm going to the arcade with some friends tonight so I won't be home right away," I said. "Do you have house keys with you?"
"Yeah, I've got 'em right here!" Dani said, holding up a purple key chain with an assortment of keys on it. "Make sure you're home by at least ten though okay? You know Mom doesn't like it when we stay after school without telling her."
Due to work, my mother gets home really late; some nights she isn't back until midnight or later.
"Yeah got it," I said, walking away, "Alright I've gotta go, but I promise I'll be back by ten!"
