"Cupid Pai . . ." called his supervisor one day. "I need you to take care of something for me."
The newly hired young assistant whose name was called immediately paused his game and stood up straight.
This better be important. Prapai thought.
"Yes Supervisor Cupid Payu, anything I can do for you that you cannot do for yourself?" answered Prapai in a mock show of respect.
The senior disregarded his sarcastic response and proceed.
"So basically, Rain . . ."
Payu is unable to finished his sentence for Prapai cut him off.
"I'm here to work, sir. Not run personal errands, sir. So if you have nothing else for me, sir. I will leave now, sir."
Prapai was about to leave when Payu stopped him.
"This is work." Payu said. Voice suddenly serious.
"Yeah? Let's hear it." Prapai replied while un-pausing his game.
This earned him a slap on the back of his head.
"What's with that attitude? And who told you you can play games during office hours? Get a grip on yourself will you?" The senior cupid reprimanded him.
"Ouch. You do know this is Physical Harassment, right?" Prapai, the new hire threatened while massaging his poor head.
"Go ahead. Complain. Protest. Whatever. The gods won't care."
"Heck, I can't believe you're only paying me with ambrosia for all my work here and I even get abused."
"You just came in today, lazy bum. You haven't done any work yet."
"You're about to give me one, aren't you?"
"Why did you apply here again?"
"For immortality, duh. You think I'd like to carry stupid arrows all day and wear those equally stupid wings if not for the chance to play my games for all eternity? Of course, no."
"I thought you're here for the free coffee?"
"Well that too. I mean, coffee is great and all that but men needs ambrosia for immortality. It's a no-brainer for me to apply for a job here." The younger explained.
"But the Underworld were hiring too." Payu said.
"Cousin, getting a job in the Underworld is equivalent to getting a job in the customer service industry on earth. The souls in Hades either complain all day, shout all day or cry all day. I'm not yet insane to go there. I'd rather mess with people's love life. Here the workload is light because very few are stupid enough to want to fall in love, most of them are focused on work."
The senior cupid rolled his eyes on this. Quiet quitting is already a thing with the new hires.
"Okay. Enough of this nonsense. We've got work to do. Rain said the FATES called. They have a job for us." The senior cupid said in a business-like tone.
"The grandmas? What is it this time?" Prapai asked exasperated as he throws both hands in the air.
"They want to arrange a lover for a young man." Payu explained.
"Did he pray for it?"
"No. Actually, he wants nothing to do with love."
"Then who are we to arranged someone for him?"
"The FATES thought he looked pitiful. He's handsome too so they said it'll be a waste to be single."
"That's not for them to decide!" Parpai countered.
"Actually it is. They are the FATES remember? They have power over human lives. They weave the plot of every interaction during a person's lifetime."
"No need to remind me Senior Cupid Payu. What I mean is, if the person explicitly thought, wished and decided to have nothing to do with love, we cannot force him. Right? We can't just shoot the arrow when the person is unwilling. It's against the rules."
"You don't look like the type to read the rule book." Payu commented.
"Geez. Just because I play games during office hours doesn't mean I don't know shit about my work."
"The higher ups has decided. The FATES are our bosses. We need to do as they say."
"But this is against the rules."
"Their word is the law around here."
"You've got to be kidding me."
"I swear I'm not."
"Who is the poor guy?"
"Wait, let me pull up the file. Let's see . . . oh, here it is, his name is SKY."
