As we walk out of City Hall, the rain slaps my face and there a frequent flashes of lightning. Zeus is warning us. Danger is coming. And it’s coming fast.
Hunter stops walking and I bump into his back. He turns his head around just enough so that I can see him smirking over his shoulder. He thought this was funny.
Great going, Min! You got trapped working with a complete lunatic who thinks saving the world from evil is funny, I think to myself.
I suddenly start laughing to myself, quietly and I know he can hear it. It sounds almost hysterical. It bubbles up in me, and I am unable to hold it back.
“What’s so funny?” He asks, no longer smiling, but looking right at me and then all around us, trying to find the source of my laughter.
Seeing him so confused makes me laugh harder and I try to calm down, taking deep breaths.
“Well?” He asks again.
“Sorry… I find it funny that you think this situation is funny.”
“I don’t find this funny. It just makes me happy to know I’m not alone for once,” he voice is so serious I can’t do anything but believe him.
I don’t answer and continue down the stairs, wind blowing my ponytail around everywhere. I am already soaked from the rain but I don’t feel the wetness or the chill. I make it to the bottom of the stairs and turn around.
“Hunter! Come on! We don’t have time to just stand here!” I scream at the young man who is staring blankly into space as if there isn’t any danger in the world. What was his problem?!
I looked around, looked down the street, across the road, and then back up at him. He still wasn’t moving! Was this some joke? I started back up the stairs, annoyed that he would do something so stupid when we had a job to do.
“HUNTER!” I screamed in his face and shoved against his chest, hoping for some sort of reaction. He didn’t even blink.
“GODS DAMMIT, YOU STUPID IDIOT, ANSWER ME!” I yelled louder, very frustrated.
Thunder rumbled, sounding closer than before. The rain came down harder, if that was even possible.
“Really?” I yelled upwards, staring up into the rain that was falling from the clouds, hoping the Gods were listening. “I hope you don’t have too much faith on us, because this probably won’t end well! I don’t know what you’re planning, but I hope he doesn’t mean too much to you, in case I kill him before this so called mission is complete!” I scream in utter frustration.
I push Hunter’s shoulder, trying to get him to move, to do something. It was like he had frozen. I walked down a few steps and sat, staring up into the clouds. I put my chin in my hands and didn’t look back at Hunter, not caring anymore. I sat and waited.
I jumped when I felt someone brush up against me. I turned a little to the right and saw that it was Hunter, sitting next to me, his shoulder and knee touching mine. It made me nervous he was so close; I wasn’t used to the contact.
"Hey…” he started to say. I ignored him.
“Look, I’m sorry. How long have you been sitting here?” His voice is full of worry.
“Why do you care? You just stood there. What in Hell was that?! Are you crazy?” I scream at him, forgetting about my plan to be calm.
“Okay, I know you won’t believe me but can I please just explain? It wasn’t my fault! I heard you! I saw everything around me! I knew what was happening, okay? I have no control over it!” He yells back, glaring at me.
What he says has shocked me. I don’t want to know the answer; that I am scared of the answer, but I have to ask him this question.
“Hunter. Control. Control over what?”
"The visions,” he whispers, looking sad.
I was right; I didn’t want to know the answer.
