the cold air nipped at her skin as penelope stared out at the restless waves. she tugged at her black coat, shivering. salt water crashed against her dirty, worn combat boots, wetting the bottom of her jeans a bit in the process. she didn't care. as she stared out into the water, she let all of her thoughts of college and reality fade as she took in the crisp air and the bittersweet smell of the water.
lost in her thoughts, she began to hum absentmindedly, letting her mind slip into a temporary bliss. her eyes involuntarily closed, and she let her breathing slow and herself relax more and more, until she heard sand shuffling beside her.
"do you come here often?"
as if her brain were a rubber band, penelope snapped back into reality, noticing a boy beside her, standing next to her in the light tan sand. she simply ignored him, staring out into the sea. she had a simple philosophy: if you don't want to be rude, just ignore the negativity. that's not technically rude, and they won't bother you again.
penelope couldn't exactly point out what was negative about this boy, except for his appearance. he had green hair, (that's right, bright neon green hair), and he was wearing rolled up skinny jeans, no shoes, and a big brown coat, that clashed with the color of his pants. he didn't look like anyone sophisticated enough to be at the college, so she went ahead and brushed that assumption away.
the only reason she didn't like his appearance, (being he was very nice in the face, other than some kind of spaghetti sauce or something that was rubbed on the side of his mouth), was that he didn't fit into a category. his hair and his black jeans suggested that he was one of those reject kids, but his nice untouched jacket said that he was rich and smart. penelope didn't know what to say about the no shoes part. maybe it was just for the beach.
"i'm taking that as a no," he mumbled, but didn't walk away. he stood right beside her, staring out in the same direction as she was. towards the unknown.
penelope sighed, finally prying her attention away from the bright blue waves and staring at him. he wasn't looking at first, but he slowly turned his attention to her, looking straight into her eyes. penelope stepped towards him, standing up on her toes and leaning in close to his face.
the boy didn't know whether to close his eyes or keep staring into hers, so he just stared at her nose awkwardly. penelope's small hands moved up to his lips, cupping his jaw as she used her thumb to gingerly wipe off the sauce. he didn't thank her.
she turned back to where she was before, crossing her arms, and returning her eyes back to the horizon. the boy stayed still.
"are you mute or something?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
penelope scoffed, giving him a hateful look. "are you retarded or something?"
"well, maybe you should actually talk to people before they assume that you don't, just suggesting," he shot back harshly, not really wanting to lose a fight with someone who looked so small.
"maybe you should be less of an asshole before people decide that they should treat you that way," penelope rolled her eyes, crossing her arms and walking away from the boy.
"thanks for ruining my day," she muttered harshly.
