when vance made his way into the cafeteria, it was chaos. there was way too many people for his liking. he looked around the room and noticed will standing up, waving to him. he was sat with a couple other boys, all who were wearing the same shirt. it read 'hellfire'. there was no way in hell he was sitting over there with them. they would definitely drag him into their little club, and that was the last thing he wanted. he didn't recognize any of the people beside will. one had dark, black-ish curly hair, that was almost a mullet. on the other side of him sat a kid with lighter and much curlier hair. he had a hat on, but vance couldnt make out what it said.

on the other side of the table he saw eleven. she, and the two people beside her, weren't wearing the shirts. he recognized one of the people beside her — max. the ginger haired girl had been over a couple times since vance had moved in. he was pretty sure they were dating, but no one ever confirmed — nor denied — that. on the other side of max sat another familiar face. lucas, he often times came over with max. he really wasn't sure what was going on there, but it felt rude to ask, so he always just kept to himself. eventually he'd surely be able to piece it together. there were some other kids, but they were blocked out of his view and he couldn't really put together what they looked like from this distance.

he pretended not to see will and continued to look for a spot to sit. he took notice of jonathan and argyle sitting at a table with two girls, whom he didn't recognize. one of them had short, curly — no, frilly, brown hair and the other had short, wavy, red hair. he couldn't make out their faces from this far. he noticed bruce sitting at the table, and part of him wanted to go sit with bruce. but, he knew that would've been weird. he noticed an empty table and he swiftly made his way over to it. he set his tray down and then sat down. he was happy to have a little alone time, even though he wasn't really alone. unfortunately for him, some guy decided he looked too lonley. "hey!" the guy said, sitting down beside him. he sounded much older than most of the other kids.

vance groaned as he turned to face the boy. he had long curly hair, practically the same as vance's, except it was dark brown, and he immediately noticed he was wearing the same shirt that will and his little group had been wearing. "can i help you?" vance asked. the boy held his hands up defensively. "woah, i was just seein' if you wanted to sit with us. i'm eddie— you obviously know will, he's talked about yo—" vance didnt let him finish. "if i wanted to sit with you, dont you think i would've went over there?" his tone was annoyed now, but eddie didn't seem to get the hint. "oh— well, will thought you didnt see him. he didn't want you to have to sit alone, so—" vance cut him off again. "i dont wanna join your little club. thats not my thing. i dont even do friends, so i especially dont do clubs. ya get me?" vance snapped.

eddie seemed to finally get his point. he stood up, still holding his hands up defensively. "okaaay then. it was just an invite, don't get your panties in a twist." he chuckled, and that seemed to annoy vance more. eddie noticed the look on vance's face, so he didn't say anything more. he silently went back to his table. vance watched him, and he noticed the disappointed look on wills face when eddie sat down. vance scoffed, turning back to face his food. this was stupid, none of them actually cared. will was just inviting him out of pity. he probably secretly hated vance for moving in with them, and honestly, vance couldnt blame them. he'd be pretty pissed if sone random screw-up child just randomly moved—

"hellooo? anyone in there?" vance flinched hard as he was brought back to reality. a boy had sat down across from him and he hadn't even noticed. the boy smiled when vance glared at him. "ah, welcome back to earth!" the boy had short, dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes. "why are you sitting here?" vance asked. the boy raised a brow. "you don't own this table do you?" vance started to reply with something snarky, but he didn't get the chance because the he just continued to talk.

"no, you don't. besides, you looked lonely." he said simply, before continuing. "oh, and don't hit me with the 'i want to be lonley'. because, you and i both know, you don't. you say you want to be lonley because you haven't had a choice your entire life. you've been outcasted, pushed away, so eventually you just accepted it and decided to try and be proud of it. unfortunately, that doesn't work. because, everyday you wake up and you're upset by it, so you're an asshole to people around you, even the people who try to reach out and make it so you aren't lonley anymore, because you're terrified it's sone sort of sick prank and that they never actually cared about you or liked you, and they're going to just throw you away after you get attached. am i close?"

vance's mouth hung open slightly. "nice to meet you, i'm finney." a small smirk crossed his face. "vance hopper, was it?" vance just glared at him. "no, you're not close." finney sucked in air through his teeth. "ah, i'm not close. i'm right on the spot then, yeah?" vance didnt reply, he just scoffed. finney smiled. "i have a feeling you and me are going to get along great, vance hopper."
