SYNOPSIS:
All her life, Inessa Smirnoff was trained to do two things. Fight and follow orders. Whether the mandates were from the king of Ravka or the Second Army's general, she did what she was told without question. There were times when she had her doubts, but Inessa always pushed them away. The Smirnoff girl knew that her opinions were almost meaningless and that she had no power in the war she was forced to fight. So instead of questioning her orders, she became the perfect soldier General Kirigan needed and always did what was asked of her.
That was how you survived a war after all.
Despite wanting nothing more than to be on the front lines and use her gifts to help her country, Inessa was confined to the walls of the Little Palace unless General Kirigan said otherwise. Even when she did venture out into the world, she was forced to stay with the Darkling or one of his trusted Heartrenders, Ivan and Fedyor. Inessa was bound to his side since the day she was discovered to be Grisha and she never knew why.
But she rarely questioned it.
That was until a legend was proven true on a normal day in Ravka. The Sun Summoner was real. Inessa was given a new assignment from General Kirigan, one that she knew she couldn't fail. She had to protect a girl she barely knew with the power to save them all. But after a startling truth was revealed, the Smirnoff girl was left with the biggest decision of her life. Now she must decide who to trust in a war between light and dark.
Inessa just hoped she picked the right side before it was too late.
