TERESA SANTOS was a coward.

She'd been running her whole life— from her family, her home town, but, most of all, she ran from the shadows. Or, really, she ran from what came with them. She was afraid of what happened when she closed her eyes, afraid of what happened when she didn't. Tessa was terrified of what she couldn't control.

Teresa Santos was alone.

She had been since she was twelve— with no friends to rely on, no family to go home to, and no place to stay. And that was entirely her fault.

She drove everyone away, and she knew that, but she didn't expect the ache in her heart that followed her actions— she had only ever been trying to protect everyone. She had only ever tried to be good.

Everything she did, she did out of love, but it always managed to hurt her the most.

Teresa Santos was going out of her mind.

Everyone told her so— no one else could hear the voices in her head. No one else could vouch for her innocence, because nobody was left to care.

She begged and pleaded for someone to take her side, but nobody ever did, so she stopped believing in miracles.

Teresa Santos was mad.

The voices in her head had come to life, taking form in almost everything you could dream of— real people, teenagers, women, children, even shadows. She was a magnet, the spirits of the dead followed her everywhere she went. They didn't care about what she wanted, they only cared that someone could finally see them.
