On November 29th 1887, Avery Veryss was born in New York Manhattan.
She lived a fairly normal life
Up until she was 4
Her fathers alcohol addiction got so bad, too bad in fact
So her mother, packed her things and left
But the worst part was
She never looked back
Never wrote to her
Never thought about who she was leaving her daughter with
Just left
All that Avery had left of her, was the Teddy bear she had given her when she was born. And she held onto that thing like it was the last price of food on earth
Did she not love her?
Did she not care?
What had Avery done wrong to make her mother not have a second thought about leaving her with her father?
She was 4 and didn't fully understand what was happening
But she understood one thing
Her mother wasn't coming back
...
Her father wasn't any better though
His addiction became worse and worse like a weed that wouldn't stop spreading
Sometimes when she would come home from school, he would be drunk and he even called her "Martha" A few times
That was her mothers name, not her's
Sometimes, in a drunken fit of rage, he would hit her, slap her.
But that was it
Most of the time he was "nice" as nice as he could be
Avery knew her father was depressed and didn't want to be too hard on him.
After all, she knew he was a good person, he was for 4 years of her life
Until he forced her to get a job at a theater
But this wasn't any normal theatre
Sure, people would sing and dance there, but if people wanted too, they would pay the owner extra if they wanted some alone time with the performers
(This is not a strip club btw)
And of course, Avery got this experience first hand. Well not really experienced. More like watched. Luckily the owner had some sort of sympathy, and realised that maybe an 11 year old shouldn't have to go through that. but whenever it did happen, she would have to watch in horror knowing she couldn't do anything.
Most of the kids working there were ages 10-16, luckily she was friends with all of them, they were a tight nit family, the only real family they thought they would ever have. So they were all pretty close
Luckily she was the second youngest, and didn't get as bad of an end of a stick as the 15 or 16 year olds did.
She wanted to help them, wanted to get them out of here, find them a job that was better then this.
But she couldn't do anything about it
As a employee, A 11 year old especially, she had nothing against the owner
What could she do
The job paid well, but it didn't make her happy. It made her father happy though so that made her feel like it was worth it
But was it?
....
