Chapter 1 - Yato's POV -

"Sekki!" I yell, while charging towards the big, blue, frog ayakashi.

Yukine shoots into my hand and I jump up into the air.

I run my index and middle finger down his steel blade, "Those who would desecrate this land of the rising sun, I deliver to you thy vast defilement!"

I let myself fall, and stab the vile creature through the head, "Rend!"

I drop down and land in the grassy field, catching my breath.
A black shadow comes from behind, followed by a flash of light.

"Good job, Yukine." I hold the blade out to my side, "Revert."

I look over at him, his blonde hair blowing in the gentle breeze.

He turns and glares at me, "Why are your hands always so gross and sweaty?!"

I figured that was coming, but it hurts every time.

"I'm hungry, and it's hot out here." He complains. "Let's go back to Kofuku's place."

"Alright. Six ayakashi isn't bad for today." I call Daikoku, and teleport us back to their shrine.

We land outside on the porch and we walk in through the sliding wood doors. Daikoku, Kofuku, and Hiyori are gathered at the small table, sorting through a bunch of papers. Hiyori notices us, gets up, and runs towards us, wrapping her arms around us in a group hug. She pulls away and a look of concern crosses her face. I frown at her and at the same time Daikoku stands up.

"Yato, will you come talk to me for a moment." He says, motioning outside.

I glance at Kofuku, who looks rather excited. I hope this doesn't turn into a fist fight. I can totally see Kofuku being hyped up over that. Yukine plops down at the table and grabs a persimmon out of the brown bowl Kofuku offers him. He looks completely calm. I cautiously follow Daikoku outside, and he closes the doors behind us. We stop and face each other in front of Kofuku's persimmon garden. I notice that she left the hose turned on, and water is continually spraying a muddy patch of grass. Daikoku hands me a Manila envelope, with a red and orange fox stamped in the middle.

I grab it and turn it over. There's no return address.

"What is this?" I ask as I pulled the letter out of the already open envelope.

Daikoku shakes his head, "Don't know. It arrived this morning on the front porch, requesting specifically for you."

I hand the envelope back to him, and unfold the letter. It reads:

"Dear Yato,

"We wish to invite you to our shrine in northern Shikon for a greeting
party of sorts. You're allowed to bring two companions. We want you to
feel completely comfortable while you stay with us. I will be sending
someone to escort you. Thank you!

Sincerely, Nanami."

I fold the letter back and shove it in my pocket. I look up at Daikoku and frown.
He's looking at me suspiciously.

"What?" I ask.

"Yato, if this turns out to be your crazy dad's work I won't let you involve Yukine and Hiyori." He states, knowing that they'd be my picks.

"I don't think it's him, but we'll definitely know when these 'escorts' arrive." I head back inside and walk over to the fridge, opening it and pulling out a beer. I take a big gulp and gasp in pleasure. I take a seat at the table and the others look at me expectantly.

Finally Yukine speaks up, "Well?"

I look at him. "Well, what?"

"What was in the envelope?"

"How did you-"

"I told him what was going on." Kofuku chimes. "And Hiyorin was with us when we found it."

"Well, I guess we just wait for the escorts then." I decide.

"But what if they turn out to be enemies?" Hiyori asks, concerned. "I don't want you to get hurt."

I feel my face heat up and look down at my boots. All of a sudden I hear a huge crash from outside, and muffled voices.

"Master Mizuki!" A slightly male voice yelps. "You've destroyed the pretty garden!"

"Whoops!" A different male voice remarks. "Although, who grows persimmons in their backyard?"

"My persimmons?!" Kofuku gasps and shouts, "Kokki!"

She jolts up and runs outside, Daikoku flying into her hand in the form of a fan.

Yukine, Hiyori, and I look at each other in horror before running after her.

"No, Kofuku!" I yell, "You'll open a vent!"

I turn the corner and run right into Kofuku. "What the-?!"

She takes another step back, "I think a vent is the least of our worries..."

She points ahead and I glance around her to see a giant white snake sitting in her persimmon bed.

"Yikes!" I jump back and step on Yukine's foot.

"Ouch!" He yelps. "What is your deal?!"

He looks around me and sees the albino reptile that is easily taller than the house. "Oh."

I look at him and call, "Sekki!"

He obliges and I rush towards the snake, holding Yukine like a baseball bat that I'm about to swing. I close in. Fifteen feet. Ten feet. Five, and I ready a swing aimed at the snake's neck. But before I can lop the snake's head off a young man jumps in my way and I skid to a stop. His white hair sways in the breeze, as well as his green and white kimono. I ready Yukine again.

"Wait!" He yelps and protects his head, "Why don't we just put the weapons away and talk about this in a civilized manner?"

I look back and shrug at Hiyori, who looks ready to lash out with a jungle savate technique at any given moment.

I look back at him, "Alright, talk."

He smiles anxiously and bows, "I am Lady Nanami's familiar, Mizuki, and I have come to escort you to her shrine!"

Two little kids wearing freaky masks jump up and and the male voice I heard earlier says, "Don't forget about us!"

The one with a somewhat feminine mask bows, "I am called Onikiri!"

The other one has a mask with one eye open and one closed, he bows also, "And I am known as Kotetsu!"

We stare at the weird trio, questioning whether or not to believe them. All though, the letter did say they were sending escorts...

I lower Yukine and tell him to revert, shocking the Mizuki guy. Yukine mumbles something unintelligible but probably insulting. Hiyori trots up to my side with a determined look.

"Alright," she says, "Take us three to the shrine of your Lady."
