Chapter 2
"Damn it." Tobias muttered under his breath and drew from the top deck of cards, grumbling more when he realized he'd have to draw again. We were playing Uno and I was down to three cards. Meanwhile, poor Tobias was holding ten and still counting. But even though he was complaining loudly and making funny faces that usually coaxed a smile, I couldn't have the same enthusiasm I'd had when I'd first arrived.
We'd finished the movie around twelve, and since then, I'd been sulking. Why did I agree to do this for Tobias? The thought of playing matchmaker for my crush made me want to crawl into a hole and die. I'm so stupid. I shouldn't have offered. Carla and I didn't even talk much as I made it seem we did. Yes, she's kind, but in a cordial kind of way. At most we exchange the occasional hello when we pass each other in the hallways. But as always I was eager to please. When it comes to Tobias, I always am.
I sighed and stared down at my cards. I shouldn't be so selfish. It's not like he'd ever be with me anyway. Tobias would never want to be with a guy. Especially me. I'm still surprised that he'd accepted me so easily. Before his brother came home, he'd seemed disgusted by homosexuality. I remember the days when he'd complain about his brother's sexuality and how it was creating a bigger rift in the family. Now he's covering for this same brother so he can spend the night out with his boyfriend. Even so, we're better off as friends anyway. As friends, it was safe. I couldn't lose the only person I have left.
"Hey, it's your turn." I glanced up and realized that Tobias had finally found a matching color." What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I said quietly. "Just thinking."
"Well, stop thinking. Whatever it is, it's making you sad. And for God's sake, Oliver..." He trailed off and laid down his deck. "Talk to me."
"I'm okay. Really." I said, turning away from him to fiddle with the music playing on his laptop. Tobias frowned and stared at me hard, clearly concerned. I squirmed uncomfortably under his gaze. Luckily, before he could delve into it more, his mother popped her head into the room, smiling at me kindly before turning her gaze to Tobias.
"Tobias, can you help me get my knitting kit from the top shelf?" He nodded and followed her out of the room. She huffed in frustration as she led him down the hall."Your father seems to forget that I'm not six feet tall."
I waited in silence, staring at my cards while I tried to come up with an excuse for when he came back. The silence was broken when the house phone began to ring in the living room. I stood and glanced into the hall. Tobias was on his tiptoes, trying to knock the knitting kit off the shelf with a ruler. His mom was dragging a chair from the dinning room into the hall. I chuckled and squeezed by them to get into the living room.
"The phone is ringing." I called out and glanced at the screen. "There isn't a name."
"Can you answer it for us?" He said and took another wack at the bin of colorful yarn. I nodded and answered his cell phone.
"Hello?"
"Where are you?" I froze at the sound of my dad's voice. Anxiously, I glanced in Tobias' direction, relieved to see that he was still preoccupied. I cupped my other hand around the phone and slipped into the kitchen. Once I was sure that I was at a far enough distance, I uncovered it.
"I-I'm at Tobias' house." I replied softly. "I'm spending the night."
"When did I say you could do that?"
