The strong smell of herbs from the medicine den engulfed Utjirini. Varjo was sleeping in the far corner of the den inside her nest. Meanwhile Arai, Varjo's apprentice, was sorting some fresh herbs closer to Utjirini.
It was only after she finished sorting the herbs that she noticed Utjirini standing near the entrance, now looking at her paws. Arai gently woke Varjo up and Utjirini thought about taking the chance to run, but she wasnt going to repeat what she had done last time, just as Dej Khov had said. She slowly walked up to the medicine cats, and sat down.
"All done!" Arai exclaimed cheerfully.
Varjo unemotionally turned her back towards Utjirini, a dark shadow forming over her eyes as she walked away. Utjirini shivered. Not just from the cold pulp on her wing and nose, but from Varjo's coldness. She remembered how they grew up as denmates.
Varjo and Utjirini had grown up together their whole lives. Varjo was always the bravest, most enthusiastic kit.
As an apprentice, she trained the hardest out of all the kits to become a strong warrior. At the time, her father was the clan's deputy, so she had a high chance of becoming leader someday.
