After dark, as she lied with him, she'd hoped his embrace would never drift too far from hers as it was senseless to decay if not in the arms of a lover. And, time and time again, they'd wound up under the same covers, the same soft breeze in the same old world. For the stars they shined. For him, for her, and for whatever time they had left of one another. Not knowing how, when or even why, they'd shared a silence that was constrained by the unknown and unspoken. It was to remain that way, too, since neither could imagine things being any other way. Despite how uncomfortable times and things were, and could often be.

They had key differences that exposed themselves in each conversation of daily lives, connections, and arguments the most. Decades had separated their minds, but not their feelings for one another. As naïve as she was, and as humbled as he had been, they were often disconnected at times. And that was okay. Until it wasn't; then it would eventually be. They, truthfully - are and will continue to be - one in the same. Bleeding each other dry over and over. Forever synchronized with the rifts of the past and harmonious with the changes of the future.

The breeze crept silently into the room, flicking at the end of a fiery cigar, letting the smoke dance through the glaring moonlight. With every exhale, stars jumped in and away from her point of view. And then - without asking - subtly she proposed, intertwining her fingers gently atop his, she brought the cigar to her lips and took a long drag. Burning her lungs from the inside out, it made her eyes glisten but she fought the urge to critique his taste.

"You don't even smoke."

He jokingly remarked, and took some for himself.
Coughing hoarsely, swallowing the bitter taste,

"How about you just let things be?"

Almost offended, he made a face and inhaled some more.

"I can let things...be..."

He couldn't.

"I just think it's..."

She interrupted, in an impressionable way as to mock him.

"strange?"

Raising her head against his chest as she did it, he laughed. Basking in her childish spirit. For it were the simple moments such as this that nurtured his soul. He'd searched his own - many times - to find that part of him. But soon, he'd realized that that part of him was and always would be found in her, and that's what made her his. The way their hands fit together, the way his clothes oversized her, how she didn't care and didn't need to, how she folded the laundry in ways that made sense; those were things he adored - and appreciated - about her, but nobody had touched her soul quite like he did and no one could please her like he could and that... that was what mattered. Their internal workings interlocked and even if someone else had had her, or would have her, they would not love her in a way that counted or meant anything. Not like he could.

Loosely embracing her, he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Letting it be as her arm draped over his torso in an attempt to be closer than possible. Caressing so softly, she would find herself drifting to sleep in the security of his arms and he would avoid the temptation of sleep, because the dreams and not-so-sweet ones could never align with the reality they had shared.

They weren't supposed to be together, let alone love each other, and everyone - including them - knew this. But despite the trials and tribulations of their twisted relationship, the good times would be too hard to grieve. And the two of them had done enough of that without sacrificing the one person that made those same grievances seem minimal. Through it all, they had each other and even if it wasn't a lot, it was more than enough. Soon enough, he would leave his life behind to provide the one she wanted all along. He couldn't give her everything, and he knew that from the start. However, he could try and know that was all she really asked of him.

Once more, he would soothe her to sleep, the pale moonlight would hang over their shared space, and he would hang on one more day, one more night. Until he knew that - for certain - he could safely leave and make their few moments left together an opportunity for growth and change. For better or for worse, he would be by her side.
