MADELEINE ANDRUS WAS A QUIET KID. She spent most of her free time in the library, or locked up in her room, reading all the books she found. Reading was a way for her to create a protective bubble around her. She could thus forget the rumbling thunder, the rain falling in raging torrents behind the window, and the teasing of her classmates at school.

Her world was small. It boiled down to her house, the library, the school, the mere thought of which gave her stomach aches, and then her parents who had always watched over her. Madeleine was the only child of Tasha and Nick Andrus, a couple of financial analysts, who having grown up in big cities, thought to protect their daughter, by raising her in a small town in the countryside.

No one could have foreseen the tragedy that fell like a divine plague on this small town forgotten by maps and statistics. The newspapers took up the case: "Strange epidemic in a small town", "Sleeping Beauty: from fairy tale to nightmare". The press almost replaced the number of inhabitants, so many journalists flocked from the four corners of the country. The Federals also arrived in force. Everyone wanted to see and comment on the strange phenomenon.

AN ENTIRE CITY HAS SLEEPED FOR TWO WEEKS. Deaths were to be deplored. Specialists could find no explanation, even after autopsy of the victims. The bodies contained no substances, no clues. To believe that it was an enchantment worthy of a fairy tale. On the other hand, far from the carriages and the witches, the police considered a criminal act, probably terrorist. Everyone had hypotheses, explications and possible scenarios, but everyone was a thousand miles away from suspecting the truth behind it.

A FORGOTTEN AND SCARIED ORPHAN. Madeleine had spent a terrible night, during which she hadn't been able to even close her eyes. She had tried unsuccessfully to fall asleep. So, as it was already daylight, she decided to go to her parents' room. It was already 8am, and they were still sleeping. The little girl was not worried, although they used to get up very early, even on weekends. So she gently pushed the door to their room. It was dark, because their shutters were still closed. So she stands on her tiptoes and calls them to wake them up. Tasha, like Nick, remained asleep. Madeleine therefore spoke louder, but got no result. So, as a last resort she screamed until her lungs burst, she shook them as hard as her childish strength allowed. But nothing. Always nothing. Her parents remained motionless, like puppets. And the nightmare mingled with reality..
