"It sucks..." mumbled Madeleine.
She said she was stuck with some kind of psychopath. She had been wrong to follow him. What was going through her head? The young woman was blaming herself. She jerked out of Hazel's thoughts and stood again in the dreary surroundings of the warehouse. Hazel came to his senses a few minutes later.
It was raining cats and dogs outside. The raindrops hammered without interruptions the metal roof of the place where they were. Madeleine had the impression that the trap was closing in on her. Hazel slowly pulled an item from her pocket. It was some kind of dagger.
"Time is running out, Madeleine. Since you can't make up your mind to kill me... I know what remains for me to do... It's nothing personal."
The young woman was frozen in place. She thought as fast as she could, but the confrontation was inevitable. So when Hazel was within reach, she attacked him. It was a technique Gar had shown her in practice. It had just now proven its effectiveness. She held Hazel firmly while forcing him to let go of the blade. He struggled, and Madeleine tightened her hold. Eventually the boy ran out of oxygen and his hand opened automatically. Madeleine retrieved the weapon.
"What? You thought killing me would be easy? The death knell hasn't rung yet, man!" declared Madeleine then she released Hazel who was inert.
However, he had not lost consciousness. He slid down to the ground while coughing. Madeleine stood ready in case he tried to murder her again, but strangely enough, he laughed. A chilling, frightening laugh. Hazel was grinning from ear to ear, and his irises were dilated. The dark haired girl frowned and grabbed him sharply by the collar.
"What the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you laughing?" asked Madeleine.
"Oh my sweet Madeleine... Did you trust me? Did you really think I wanted to die? Come on, the only one who deserves death here is you! You killed an entire town! They're dead! Dead! And me, you made me a monster that never sleeps! But you know what... I could think day and night about my revenge. You must be punished for your crimes, all your sins... " Hazel's eyes were almost bulging as he spoke and when he was done he started laughing even harder.
"What did you do?" asked Madeleine shaking him "What did you do!"
Huge spotlights came on and blinded the young woman. Everything turned white and the air became unbearably hot. Madeleine caught sight of silhouettes rushing towards her. She was still holding Hazel and had no time to react when she was injected with tranquilizer through a syringe. She felt really bad, but it was too late to run away. Finally, she collapsed on the ground.

"Her condition is stable, Mrs Graves"
"Good. When do you expect to operate on her? Mr. Luthor asks for results. He wants to know if it's worth it."
"Her psychic activity is more intense than ever. But..."
"Go straight to the point!"
"Well... She belongs to a special category of telepaths...We are still trying to identify the area of her brain that allows her to approach the thoughts of others. As scientists, we have difficulty in believe in ESP, then we need more certainty."
"Oh, sure... You'll probably get kicked out of this project if you waste our time. We're not asking you to be fancy, but to find a way to harness this girl's potential so that we can. We're making a weapon under our control. Like the tiger boy! Except we'll get other benefits from it..."
"What do you mean?"
"That it would be better for you if you found a way to adjust your protocols. You wouldn't want Mr. Luthor to be dissatisfied, would you?"
"No Madam..."
Madeleine only heard voices. She saw nothing. It felt like a darkened movie theater just before a movie was shown on the big screen. She felt like she was suffocating. A feeling of panic grew in her as she remembered what had happened.
She tried to move even a toe, but it was impossible. Even if she managed to wave her hands in front of her face, she couldn't see them because of this darkness. So she tried to concentrate. She silenced her anxiety. Then Madeleine tried to call Gar in thought. She imagined him in the Titans tower. Maybe he was training?
When she finally accessed her thoughts, he was sitting on the floor, leaning against a green wooden door. Madeleine approached cautiously. And then she noticed that there were scratch marks on the door. Gar, meanwhile, looked terrified. The young woman put a hand on his shoulder. The green haired boy jumped, his eyes turning green and his fangs elongating.
"Don't be afraid..." murmured Madeleine.
Gar could have changed into a tiger at any moment, but he recognized Madeleine. His breathing calmed down, and his face became completely human again. Tears slowly rolled down his cheeks, so Madeleine hugged him.
"I'll be fine..." reassured Madeleine.
"No...I hurt...I hurt people...I bit..." Gar cried and Madeleine didn't understand what he meant by that.
"I hurt people, too. And I regret it! I'm sure it's the same for you." replied Madeleine, patting the green-haired boy on the back.
"Madeleine... Why did you leave?" Gar muttered, closing his eyes.
Madeleine remained thoughtful, stroking the green-haired boy's head. It was a question she had asked herself. If she had stayed in the tower, none of this would have happened? She sighed and pulled away from Gar to look at him. Her eyes widened when she noticed the lower part of his face was covered in blood.
"It starts again…" Gar slurred and looked away, thinking he was horrifying Madeleine. "I'm sorry..."
Madeleine wanted to answer something, but the door opened. Gar was rushed there. Madeleine tried to catch him, but their hands let go and the door slammed shut. The young woman called in vain. He had disappeared in spite of himself. Someone was controlling Gar. Madeleine was sure of it. So she decided to act and quickly. It was up to her to save him this time.
