Author's Note: This prologue doesn't really have any importance, it's just setting the scene for the rest of the book. As you can probably guess, there will be one chapter per day until Christmas! I will do my best to post the right chapters on the right days, but I will be out of town for a few days so some may be posted a day early or late. Enjoy!
Also... is there any way to make Ronin not seem like a creep? Because whenever I write him he comes out...weird. Which is kinda what I wanted here, but I was just wondering.
"Darlin', hand me the wrench." Ronin calls from underneath the red sedan. One huge, greasy hand reaches out from under the carriage.
"Here." I roll my eyes and hand him a socket wrench from the floor, which he could have reached himself.
"Honey, I said the needle-nose pliers. That's a socket wrench."
"What the heck do you need needle-nose pliers for? And you said the wrench." I sigh slightly. I was positive he asked from the socket wrench, but if I ever mention this again, he'll brush it off like it never happened.
"No, Hon, I didn't. And what I'm doing is none of yer business. You wouldn't understand."
"I'm sure I would." I hand him the pliers.
"No, you wouldn't. Ugh." He grunts, twisting something with the pliers. "People keep sending in these run down hunks of metal. I'm gonna have to work during my break again." He complains.
"Well, they expect us to fix them. I mean, you are a mechanic--"
"Don't get smart with me, Missy!" Ronin cuts me off.
"Sorry." I don't really mean it, but I'm used to apologizing. "Maybe I could check it out."
"You couldn't do it. If I can't fix something, no one can."
"I'll do it during the break! And besides, you're the one paying me. You have to give me a chance one of these days."
"You know I only hired you because we're understaffed, and I happen to know your aunt." He tells me.
"I know." 'Cause you won't let me forget it, I think, but don't say. "I'll be really careful with the car."
He sighs. "Fine. You give it a try during break, and only then. And you will be very careful. Understand?"
"Yes." I smile. Finally, a chance to prove myself.
