A/N: Just a short little epilogue today <3 I still don't know if this all went too quickly, or too slowly, but oh well!
On Christmas morning, I take my time getting up and have a lovely breakfast of toast, and hot cocoa, since I'm not the greatest cook. I can't help thinking of Jay, and I wonder how his Christmas is going. I hope everything worked out. I feel a twinge of regret, never having told him . . . I don't even know what. It doesn't matter now.
It's just a little crush, I remind myself. Not even that. We've only known each other for less than a week. I guess even a girl like me can't help getting a little carried away, becoming friends with a celebrity, and all that. In another month, I'll forget about all of this. Probably.
My phone rings–it's the family wishing me a merry Christmas. I'm happy to talk to them, of course, but they do go on forever, and it's difficult to stay vague about what I've been doing this past week.
"I heard you've been running the shop yourself." Kai says. "That's great!"
"Well, I was sort of the only option. But it was fun." Fun. I guess it was. It was certainly nice to actually work on cars, despite the fact that I didn't exactly obey Ronin's rules.
Lloyd tells me what he got for Christmas (he already opened his presents, of course). Luckily his mother stops him before he tells me what they all got for me, too, although I don't really care. Finally, they all tell me merry Christmas again, and that they love me and miss me, and I tell them I miss and love them too and I promise I'll visit soon. I mean it–I really do wish I was home. But if I was home, I wouldn't have finished Jay's car, I remind myself.
When, a moment later, I see that particular familiar million-dollar car pull up in front of the shop, I can't believe my eyes. Then I'm up in a flash, running down the stairs and out to meet Jay as he steps out of the car.
"Oh, I'm so glad to see you! But I thought you were spending the day with your father!" I burst out the moment he closes the door, a million different emotions vying for space in my heart.
"There was a change of plans. My dad's shoot is going to take a few more days, and my mom and I are going to be with him." Jay says sadly. "But it doesn't matter. Apparently we'll have our 'Christmas dinner' when we get back."
"I'm sorry." I say. "But I'm glad you're here. You don't have anything else for me to fix, do you?"
"Nope, the car's in great shape." He grins. "But . . . I do have something to tell you. Something I should've told you yesterday, before I left."
He clears his throat. "We're flying out in an hour," He explains, "But I wanted you to know . . . I really like you, Nya. And I want to see you when I get back . . . If you want to see me." He looks down and turns bright red.
I feel my breath catch in my throat. For a moment I can't speak, but I nod and blush.
"I do," I blurt out. I can't say anything more, but it doesn't matter for now. He hands me a wrapped box.
"This is for you. Thank you so much . . . For everything."
One Year Later
"Nya! Wake up!" Lloyd is shaking me awake.
I groan. "Come on, let me sleep. You're eleven now!"
"I did! We made breakfast without you! But we're starting to open presents, and your boyfriend called." He says the last part in a singsong voice.
"How do you know?" I ask, sitting up.
"Well, I don't, but who else would be calling you?"
It's true, there really isn't anyone else it could have been at this time. I pick up my phone and follow my cousin sleepily into the living room. We sit around the tree opening presents, and I think of last Christmas as my phone starts ringing.
"Hi."
"Merry Christmas!" Jay says. "Did your cousin like the present?"
"He loved it." The present was a DVD of his father's most recent movie, signed by Cliff Gordon himself. "Are you having a good Christmas?"
"Yeah. But I miss you."
"I miss you too."
"Can you believe it's been a year?" He asks.
Part of me can't. We've only been really dating for less than ten months. But we've come so far. And I'm so, so glad.
So before I hang up, I take a deep breath, and, in front of everyone, I finally say it.
"Love you."
"I love you too."
