As Claire enters the door of St. Bonaventure Hospital, she felt so excited and nervous. She went straight to the receptionist and asked for Marcus Andrews. She was asked by his secretary who she was and if she had an appointment set for him.
"Claire Andrews-Browne" she told the secretary.
Upon hearing that, the secretary remembered that Marcus had told her his niece will be coming. She instructs Claire by the door and knocked.
"Excuse me Dr. Andrews, your niece is here." Claire hears the secretary say and from the inside a...
"Let her in" was heard.
Claire enters the office and greets her uncle. Andrews welcomes her with a hug and said that he hopes that her coming in late doesn't upset the other residents and the attending who'd handle her. He also told her about how she might experience prejudice given that people might know she was his niece.
"I can handle those, they're just prejudices" she tells Marcus
"I do hope for sure you do." Marcus tells her chuckling.
The two of them leaves his office to go the ER to meet her co-residents and attending. When they reached the ER, she sees 4 people by the nurses' station. Her attention was shifted when he hears Marcus greet someone.
"Dr. Melendez, good morning." Marcus says
"Good morning, Dr. Andrews...and?" She hears Dr. Melendez ask
"Oh uh...Claire Browne." She answers with hesitancy
"doctors, this is Claire and she'll be joining you for her residency." Marcus introduces her and she nods her head as a greeting.
"Morgan Reznick." She hears one of the residents say and sees her hand waiting for her to shake it, and she did.
"Jared Kalu" says the taller man who had an obvious English accent. She shook his hand and turns to the last resident.
"Shaun Murphy" says the last one, Shaun acted weird, but she dares not to ask him right now.
"I'm Dr. Neil Melendez, your attending." Dr. Melendez introduces himself.
"Alright since you've done the introductions, I'm gonna leave Claire to you Dr. Melendez." She hears Marcus say and sees Dr. Melendez nod his head.
"So, school?" she hears Morgan ask
"Oh, Harvard" she answers not in a boastful tone.
"Oh cool, what do your parents do?" Morgan again asks
"Uh... engineer and surgeon." Claire replies
"You must've come from a well-off family then." She hears Kalu comment.
"Well, you can say that." She replies, unsure.
"Enough with interviewing her. Let me tell you this Dr. Browne, don't let the title get into your head and most importantly don't expect me or anyone to give you a special treatment because you're Dr. Andrews' niece." She hears Dr. Melendez say
The shocked expressions of the 3 other residents didn't go unnoticed. Oh well, she thought, here goes the prejudices.
"I don't expect you to, Dr. Melendez." She replies to the doctor who seem to show a tiny bit of irritation to her.
She wonders what could she have done to him for him to get annoyed with her.
After about 6 months into her residency Claire is getting a hang of it. She had gotten close to the other residents, but with Dr. Melendez, she could say he was less irritated with her. Though she did kinda mess up the first few months here.
