Her family was wrongfully shot by the Drug Dealers in the Neighborhood and since Kaylin was about nineteen years old, they had raped her and left her for dead and beaten. Olivia and Nick were the ones who found her and saved her life. Olivia had been visiting her since and eventually adopted her the same time she adopted Noah. After the events with William Lewis, she suffers with intense PSTD and she is going through therapy to help her through it. After Intelligence helping them with a case in New York, Hank requested that Kaylin go to Chicago to help them, Olivia agrees to one condition: Hank keeps an eye on her, and he agrees. Hank keeps her near wherever he goes. Kaylin then begins to fall in love with the ex-ranger, Jay Halstead and life got a little more complicated, but - in a way, easier for her.
