A gentle ocean breeze blew sand in my face. I sneezed and rubbed my eyes, groaning lightly.
My head's killing me...
"Row..?"
"Cynda..?"
"Osha..?"
I suddenly realised I wasn't alone and sat up quickly, breathing out in relief when I saw no danger, just three small Pokémon. A little Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott. I smiled and reached out, petting the Rowlet. Oshawott nudged my hand and I giggled, petting it as well. At least there was something familiar; the environment was rather strange to me. I was just wondering where I could have ended up, when I heard a shout.
"HEY!"
I jumped, as did the Pokémon. The three scattered and ran away. I looked up in fright at the person running up to me. He was wearing a lab coat and some strange headgear, a bonnet of some sort, which was rather purple. He didn't seem too threatening upon closer inspection, but I didn't let my guard down.
"Ohw, blast! I thought I had them. Those three won't sit still even for a second, though I suppose anyone would stop to look if someone fell from the sky. Are you okay?" he asked, looking me up and down.
"Excuse me, what? Fell from the sky?" I asked, rather disoriented.
"You don't remember? You must've hit your head quite hard, though you don't seem hurt otherwise. Are you?" the man asked in a tone of voice I judged to be genuine concern.
I grit my teeth. "I'm always hurting, but that's not relevant now, I suppose. Where on earth am I?"
"Oh dear, well, you came from up there." The man pointed up at the sky, and I followed his gaze. I gasped in shock upon seeing the huge, swirling rift in the sky above a giant, though somehow familiar-looking mountain. "I... I fell through there?"
The strange man nodded and crossed his arms. "I... Sorry, could you please give me a hand? Those Pokémon seemed to let you get close, could you catch them for me? I've been running after them all morning."
I took a breath and got up, gritting my teeth against the pain. "S-sure," I muttered as soon as I was standing. My mind was still fuzzy, staticky, and I couldn't really think. Going through some familiar motions might be helpful. I focussed on my breathing as the man rummaged around in his bag.
"I'm professor Laventon, by the way," he told me, and I nodded, though I was sure I'd forget it again in a second. "Here you go, this is a Pokéball. In order to catch a--" I took the balls and nodded. "I know how it works," I said simply, but after looking down at what I was holding, I furrowed my brow. These strange devices didn't look or feel like Pokéballs at all. These were made of what to me appeared to be wood and they resembled Pokéballs for sure, but they looked more like some primitive homemade version.
I was sure they'd still work the same way as regular Pokéballs would, though, so I looked up to see where those three critters had run off to. I saw each of them frolicking about nearby and approached them slowly and casually. I had done this a million times, though not often without a Pokémon of my own. These seemed friendly enough though, so I doubted they'd attack me. I chucked a ball at Cyndaquil, then one at Rowlet, and finally one at Oshawott. The Pokéballs each captured them and as I picked them up to return them to the professor, I found him staring at me with wide eyes and an open mouth.
"O-oh my goodness..." he muttered as I handed him the Pokéballs, and I furrowed my brow. "Yes?" I asked, confused. "O-oh, well, ehm... I've never seen anyone catch a Pokémon that easily before... Please come with me."
"To where?" I asked, suddenly feeling quite vulnerable without my own Pokémon.
"To Jubilife Village, of course."
