REGULUS WASN'T HOME when Nova got the news.

Nova's uncle spent quite a lot of time away from home, though he always managed to find enough time for Nova and always tried to be home for anything important. Nova never seemed to mind his frequent absences, content to spend his time alone reading in their mansion' extensive library, left with the house elves. Occasionally, when Regulus decided he was going to be way for a longer period of time, Nova was left with his Aunt Cissy, or, sometimes, with a strange blond man named 'Ev', who always smelt of lemon and who had an intense obsession with Chocolate Frog cards.

Regulus had only been gone a few hours when that day's copy of the Daily Prophet came floating in through the window. The delivery owl with its pouch of coins was nowhere in sight, so Nova assumed Regulus had already prepaid for the papers that month. Nova never paid much attention to the Prophet, preferring to get his news from more, reliable, unbiased sources, but when he saw the image broadcasted across the front, he drew in a sharp breath, eyes flying across the page.

PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1 (the paper read)

Sources within the Ministry confirm that in the early hours of this morning, the notorious mass murderer Sirius Black managed to escape his cell in Azkaban and make it across the surrounding sea to mainland.

Black was sentenced to life in prison after the massacre that took place in the early morning of the 1st November, 1981, where he murdered twelve Muggles and one wizard, a courageous young man named Peter Pettigrew, with a single curse.

Wizards are advised to carry their wand with them at all times, and to remain alert and vigilant. If anyone holds any useful information, they are advised to contact Diana Kant at the Ministry of Magic immediately. Sightings of Black should be reported directly to the Minister himself.

"Of course I'm the most desirable heir," Nova muttered to himself, throwing the paper down on his desk and sinking into his chair. "If they're putting me against bloody Theodore Nott again..."

    He groaned, staring at the front page, where the haggard face of his father stared up at him, snarling filthily at the camera, his hair matted, his face grimy, his teeth rotten. His eyes shifted to the mirror on the wall, taking comfort in the fact that when his father looked like this, they looked nothing alike.

    "Kreacher!" Nova called.

    There was a crack, and suddenly Kreacher, his uncle's house elf, appeared before him, bowing low.

    "Yes, young master Black?" he asked, straightening up.

    "Where is my uncle?" Nova asked.

    Kreacher shifted guiltily.

    "I'm afraid Kreacher cannot say," he apologised. "Master Regulus has forbidden Kreacher from -"

    "It's alright," Nova interrupted him. "Would it be safe for you to go get him?"

    Kreacher bowed again, then disappeared with another crack.

    "That wasn't an answer," Nova muttered, before returning his attention to the newspaper in front of him. He let out a shaky breath as his grey eyes met his father's, gripping the edge of the desk tightly, clenching his jaw.
