"Hush... Hush, wake up," he heard Rune say, voice panicked. "Hush, please."
Hush coughed, took in a breath, and coughed again. It was like he was inhaling dust. His mouth felt dry.
"Oh, thank Ronad," Rune whispered, holding him close.
"Window-" Hush managed before erupting into a fit of coughs again.
"No, I wasn't able to- Hey, what are you doing?" Rune asked as Hush forced his arm to raise. He summoned whatever strength he had left and kept it straight. He didn't care. He had to get out.
There was a loud crash and Hush's arm fell again.
"Hush, you broke the glass," Rune said. "How-"
"Out," Hush breathed, close to falling unconscious again.
"Right, right," Rune stammered. Hush felt himself being lifted, and then felt the Night Winds kiss his face as Rune leaped out of the house. The Night Winds flocked to them, tousling both his hair and Rune's as they slowed the boys' fall.
Hush could tell when they hit the ground. Gradually, Hush could feel himself waking up. Feeling returned to his limbs, his heart began to pump normally again. He took in a deep breath, filling his collapsed lungs. His eyes fluttered open. It felt like he had died and come back to life. Why hadn't it happened to Rune? What had happened exactly? He'd consult his books when he got home.
But that wasn't important right now. Rune was crushing Hush to his chest. Hush patted his friend's back, arm wrapped around his neck.
"You're crushing my lungs," he squeezed out. Rune loosened his grip and Hush breathed in. He could see the fright in his friend's eyes. Hush pressed a hand to Rune's cheek and Rune hugged him again.
"I thought you were dead!" Rune cried. "You weren't breathing. You had no pulse." He started to walk to the wall, adjusting Hush a bit so he had a better grip. "We're going home!"
Hush didn't protest. He leaned his head into Rune's chest and listened to his frantic heartbeat. The Night Winds stayed by Hush, chattering and fussing over him.
He had been stupid. But he learned one thing:
The house was alive.
