The death also changed Stan, really changed him. He went from being the most responsible parent to existing. Most of the time Elya would cook small meals and do most of the house work. He was like a little grown up.

'I want us to celebrate your tenth birthday in style.' Stan said one day. He had been in his room for over a week and a phone call from Anna made him come out. Elya knew very well something was going on but his selective mutism didn't allow him to speak to anyone else other than me.

Selective mutism is when your subconscious shuts everyone else out apart from a select few.

Stan and Elya went shopping on that day, bought calculators and food enough to last a whole year. 'Everything I do, I do for you,' Stan said. 'Are you dying?' Elya asked and Stan just stood there shocked.

After the cake cutting a gunshot was heard from Stan's room. I can remember very well what I saw in that room; little Elya was so devastated. The devastation of a mature person. When the police came, she was already having dinner.
