Twenty
As the students of Royal Park Upper flooded out of the main gates, Abe, Steve, and Roger stood with a tense energy.
“Are you sure this is a good idea? Don’t you need back up or something?” Abe asked, although he was far from volunteering for the mission.
“We talked about this,” Roger said nervously checking his watch. “I need you guys to give me an alibi. Besides, if the three of us start following her she’s three times more likely to notice.”
“Don’t do anything stupid, because if you get caught I’m denying all knowledge of this,” Steve said.
“Thanks for the support,” the vigilante replied as he spotted Megan leaving the sports hall door at the side of the school. She had been avoiding them since the picture incident that morning, and whilst she had been doing that, the amigos had been plotting. “There she is.”
“Don’t screw up,” Abe said.
The vigilante jogged away from the school gates, leaving his friends behind, secretly hoping that they would not screw up. McCarthy was going to be the least of his troubles if this went wrong.
“I’m not sure about this,” Steve said once Roger had merged with the crowd of moving students.
“Any plan is better then no plan at all,” Abe muttered. “Act natural,” he said, as Megan got close. She walked by, standing out from the rest of the students like a star stands out against an empty night sky. She did not smile or wave or even acknowledge the boys. She just walked with her head down.
“Wouldn’t it make more sense for her to see Roger here, and then he starts following her? Therefore setting up his own alibi?” Steve asked in a hushed tone.
“Not my plan,” Abe said. “And it’s too late to start changing it now.”
“Your plan was unfeasible,” Steve replied.
“Was not.”
“How exactly would we have hacked into the city CCTV network and followed her with the cameras?”
“Given time we could have worked something out,” Abe hissed.
“We don---” Steve began.
“Hey guys,” Kate said, appearing from the crowd like a phantom appearing from the mist.
Both Abe and Steve jumped a little, they were so busy looking at the red head that the blonde got past their defences.
“Do you know if Roger is out yet? I wanted to talk to him,” she said. They certainly had a lot to talk about.
