Zachary was ecstatic to see Audrey again today. They were going to go for ice cream. It was nice to have a friend around, even when you feel like you should be alone. It's always been lonely for Zach.
He drove over to the ice cream shoppe, sat in a small booth at the corner and waited for Audrey to come.
But she never did.
He waited hours and hours, and finally, she came.
She walked in with her hair swept back in a ponytail, and she was looking at her phone. As she looked up, her eyes locked with his. And as soon as she saw him, she smiled.
"I hope I didn't make you wait too long. I'm always the first to come!" she said. "Anyway, when did you get here?"
"Ten," he said quietly.
"Oh shoot," she said as she looked at her phone. "I'm so so sorry! I put the wrong time! I've got to make it up to you! I'll surprise you or something."
Although he was a bit disappointed that she made him wait a very long time, he couldn't help but be a little bit happy. She showed up after all.
"That's okay," Zach said. "You came. And that's what matters," he finished softly.
Audrey looked at the boy sitting across from her. She smiled. "You always know how to make me smile Zach, and now it's my turn."
"No, Audrey. I need to make it up to you. You've been working so hard and you've been doing everything to make me smile, and honestly, I want t. For you. But first, I need to tell you something," he said, looking right into Audrey's eyes.
"I-I really like you Audrey," he finally said, letting out a breath.
