The Start
I was up early in the morning so I wouldn’t have to keep Barren waiting when he picks me up. I added his number to my phone, but I didn’t text him. I was actually a bit nervous to text him. I didn’t mind messaging guys; I actually talk to a lot of guys. But only guys as friends, but something kept me from texting him, I don’t know what it was though.
I got dressed in my usual shorts and a t-shirt. Now that it was spring I could show a little more skin and I didn’t have to wear a jacket. Especially living in Arizona, you had to wear shorts. Arizona is a very hot and dry desert and I don’t know we live here. I don’t know why anyone would live here. I much rather live somewhere that snows. I love the cold.
After brushing my teeth and brushing my hair, I skipped downstairs. I grabbed a bowl and poured myself some fruity pebbles and milk. Yum, I love fruity pebbles, it’s the best cereal in the world. I was halfway through my breakfast when the doorbell rang. I jumped up from the table, nearly knocking my bowl of fruity pebbles off the table, and ran to the door. I saw Barren’s face when I pulled the door open and we smiled at each other.
“Hey Rayne,” He stepped towards me and pulled me into a hug, squeezing me hard, “How are you?”
I pushed him away in protest and spoke with a mouth full of fruity pebbles, “Don’t do that.” I tried saying, but my words were incoherent due to the fact that I was still chewing my meal. He laughed at me.
“You shouldn’t talk with your mouth full sweetie.” His voice went high pitched like a girl’s voice and he wagged his finger in my face like he was my mother.
I slapped his finger away and swallowed my food, “Shut up, I didn’t mean to.”
“Yeah, so you ready to go?”
“Not yet. Let me finish my breakfast. You’re early. The school’s only five minutes away and school starts at 7:45, its 7:15.”
“Well maybe if I had your number, but you didn’t text me.” He glared at me with disappointed. So he did want me to text him. That’s why I was so nervous, I thought he wouldn’t want to talk to me or the conversation would be weird or something.
“Oh yeah, sorry about that, I forgot.”
“Oh okay. But don’t be nervous or shy to text me.”
He was correct, I was very nervous, but I kept a straight face, “No, I wasn’t nervous or anything. I just completely forgot.” He didn’t see past my lies so he didn’t press the discussion further; I was such a good fibber. I waved him inside the house and I went back to the kitchen table to finish my cereal. Barren settled into my couch and flipped through the TV. channels. I drained my bowl of the fruity tasting milk and went to wash it in the sink. I didn’t hear Barren come up behind so when he touched his hand to my face I screamed.
