PROLOGUE

The winged human-like things fell, in small numbers at first, but then their numbers grew. No-one knew what they were, and no-one had ever even seen them before. They were beautiful to look at, almost too beautiful. Were they angels? Were they figures sent down to earth by God?

They drifted through the air, like snowflakes, making a strange whispering sound which could only remind one of the wind. They floated through the clouds, their wings stretched out behind them. It was a truly magnificent sight. Hundreds of tiny creatures, with black, feathered wings filled the sky, leaving almost no gap for the sun's rays to reach the surface of the earth. Their faces were perfect, with no blemish on any part of their body. They seemed to do no harm, yet no-one really knew what they did. Why had they come? Was it to help the earth, or was it to destroy it?
