Richard came into sight after 20 minutes or so. When he saw us he ran towards us with a worried look.
He grasped me by my shoulders. 'are you all okay? No one got hurt right?'
I nod my head. The kids bounced off the bench and ran toward their father, hugging him. 'Dad, can we please go now? Im so hungry.'
'well ms.hungry, we'll go in a bit but I don't think we can get in yet.' Richard squatted down next to Audrey who was grinning and squeezed her cheek.
I put my hand on his shoulder and signaled him to come and talk. He told them to go and sit on the bench and we both walked a little far from the kids.
'there's a homicide at the hotel Richard. And they told us to stay till the case is closed.' Every word that escaped from my mouth had worry dripping from it.
Richard put a hand through his hair exhaling a sigh. He was worried. To someone else, it might be hard to see but I can see right through him. 'well then, maybe I would be able to convince them to let us go.'
'or maybe lets just stay. We can both call our bosses and let them know about the situation.' I suggested.
'Vanessa I can't stay here till this case gets solved! Who knows when this will end!' he started to raise his voice a little bit. I don't know why staying here is doing that much to him.
'why not?' I asked glancing at the children who were staring at us.
'because Vanessa, I cannot waste my time here just wabbling around the room waiting for this get solved. I need money to provide for this family of mine and to do that I can't miss even one day of work.' His voice was low after he saw the kids looking but it still held the aggressiveness and authority.
I stared at him for a moment. I was questioning to whether speak my mind or not and at the last moment, I decided that I am. ' and maybe that's the reason, you're always absent here. Maybe that's why the kids think that you're leaving. And MAYBE it's true. We're on vacation Richard! You're supposed to be OFF work.
I left him there standing like an idiot. I took my kids and made my way back to the hotel. He caught up to us but didn't utter a word. I saw the detective who questioned me before and signaled her to come over. Which she did after taking the statements of some other people.
'What's the problem, ma'am?'
Before I could open my mouth to ask, Richard, stepped in and started talking . 'hi, I'm Richard, I'd just like to know if there is a possibility that we can go back home cause my job starts tomorrow and I really need to be there.'
The detective turned her head towards my husband, glanced at me for a moment, and answered his question. 'I'm sorry sir, but there's no possibility. This homicide is not like the others. They brutally murdered and our only lead is that it's someone from the hotel.'
He exhaled a sigh. 'look, I know you're doing your job and I need to do the same thing,' he started to raise his voice again. 'and in order to do that, I need to go home.'
'sir, with all due respect, do not raise your voice and tell me how to do my job. You will go home; back to your job. All we're asking is to stay here for 2 days. That's all!' The detective looked at me one more time before leaving.
'why would you say that?!' I turned him around to face me.
'why wouldn't I Vanessa? Two days pfft. They're gonna keep adding days till we practically live here.' He shook my hand away and pointed towards the police officers.
After an hour or so, we got informed that we all could go back to our rooms. Richard held Audrey on his shoulders fast asleep and I held Michael. We didn't exchange words or anything. We just hurried back into our rooms, other guests doing the same thing murmuring to each other about god knows what.
After we got into our room, we both first went into our kid's side first and put both of them in their beds tucking them in. Richard exited the room early but I stayed with the kids.
I sat down in the chair and looked at them sleeping peacefully; unaware of the situation that is happening right now with both the hotel and the relationship between their mother and father.
'I promise you, kids, I as your mother will protect you both at all costs. Whether it's dying for you or doing anything else. And if I'm not there physically know that I will always be with you in your hearts. Even if I die, I promise to guide you to the right path. Whatever I'm going through, I won't let you feel like you're getting ignored. No matter what, I will always make time for your both. I know that you both are asleep but by chance, if you hear this know that I mean it all.'
I got up from the chair and planted kisses on both of their heads. 'I love you both so much.'
I exited the room and saw Richard having a conversation on the phone. ignoring him, I got into the bathroom and took a cold shower, relieving half of the stress I had earlier.
When I came out of the shower, Richard had changed his clothes and was in bed, scrolling his phone. after I changed into my night clothes I also got into bed and decided to email my boss about the situation.
'dear principal Vince,
I am sorry to inform you that I won't be able to attend my classes for three more days and request you to extend my holidays.
There has been a very traumatizing and unfortunate incident at the hotel I'm staying at in which the police are involved. And they have informed us to stay at the hotel till the case is solved or closed.
So, therefore, I would really appreciate it if you could accept my request.'
I set my phone down on the side table and pulled the duvet over me. Richard did the same without uttering any words, and with that, we ended the night.
