My heart pounds and I feel dizzy. My mind goes blank, like I never knew how it felt before.
I look down at her lifeless corpse. Her pale, dead eyes are focused on nothing. A small pool of blood surrounding her. I look down at my hands, seeing drops of blood drip down onto the floor.
I walk back to the cellar door and unlock it, looking up into the cool, still night. The moon is sheathed under clouds, and the stars are out of sight tonight.
I close the door behind me gently. There's a faint click.
It's time to leave. It's time to get out of here. I leave the disfigured corpse of my mother for someone else to find.
And then I run. I run for a while.
It's the kind of running where your lungs begin to burn and your chest gets tight. It's a running where sweat drips down your neck and your hair gets stuck to your back. It's a running where you don't realise where you've ended up.
When I get there, it's like coming back to life after a long trip.
The hill behind the corner store. That corner store has been long shutdown. The highway is practically dead at this time of night. Cold, dead silence fills the air.
I sit down at the top of the hill.
I killed my mother. I took a pipe to her head until her face was smashed in.
I still feel no remorse. I can't. For what she did to me, she deserved worse.
Finally, I get up. I have to leave this town. I have to start again somewhere new.
