Almost immediately after Outreach Day ended, I was brought back personally by Mother to get started on packing. I would be leaving first thing the next morning: perfect for everyone to see me leave and rumours to circulate. Enid, who ended up loving the salon (to no surprise), stayed up almost all night with me packing everything into my suitcases.
Years ago, when Mother had been appointed as principal here, we had moved from our old house into the academy itself, so Nevermore was my home in more ways than one.
And now I was supposed to leave it all behind, alone.
The morning that I was supposed to leave, Enid had taken to inviting all of my friends to the entrance for a sending off— and even though I appreciated her efforts, the group attracted way too much attention.
The small apartment they chose was on the block opposite of Dr Kinbott, the new therapist contact, and her first case while working with Nevermore was to check up on me.
Hooray for therapy!!
The first day was spent unpacking a little, at least until I started procrastinating. It would take weeks to empty out all of my stuff at this rate. I guess it was the life of living out of boxes for me.
Even though I really should have gotten sleep, especially since I hadn't got much the previous night, I just couldn't. The new place felt cold and strange, and with things just lying all over the place, it was hard not to mistake a pile of clothes for a headless man staying very very still.
Eventually, I gave up on lying in the darkness, and instead watched a four hour video on the history of the big mac with mario kart music playing in the background. You know, to distract me.
By the time the sun finally rose, I had successfully felt more tired than I had my entire life. I was thankful that it was winter break for Jericho High School, and I didn't have to go for classes immediately.
But still, I doubted I would be able to get any sleep for a while, even while the sun was up. It just felt too dangerous for my subconscious mind.
So, there was only one solution. I needed coffee.
It was lucky I knew a place.

The bell attached to the door dinged as I pushed the door of the Weathervane open. None of the customers payed any attention to me in my normal clothes. In fact, they didn't even seem to notice the new arrival in the cafe. The only person that looked up was the fluffy-haired barista, who looked surprised to see me.
"Hi," I muttered tucking my hands into my jacket pockets to look for my card.
"Y/n, shouldn't you be in school?"
I coughed, diverting my eyes to scan the caffeinated drinks available on the board behind Tyler. "I've been suspended, and if it isn't obvious I pulled an all-nighter, so I'd like to hear what you'd recommend."
