The KATAMAFIA (or the Katamari Defense Syndicate in official terms) was established[1] after the millions of casualties during the Make the Moon disaster of 2005. During its second descent, the newly formed moon-Katamari managed to destroy even the land it didn't touch with just its impossible speed and effect on the tide alone. Entire continents were wiped off the face of the Earth, with the new moon floating in the sky serving as a reminder of how dangerous Katamaris can be. With smaller, resource-rich areas like Syria and other Palestinian countries gone, the global market crashed orders of magnitude greater than during the Great Depression. The problems weren't over after the event, because due to the huge mass and proximity of the new moon[2], Earth's orbit and gravitational pull were thrown off completely. After the earthquakes and tsunamis died down, the desperate survivors on larger landmasses turned to other methods to stay hopeful in the absence of government and traditional religion.
The Nine Stars emerged roughly after the formation of the 3rd star in 2002. The members of the group claimed to be connected spiritually to the Katamari and those controlling them. When they gathered, they would determine the date of the next events to occur (methods unknown) and they were consistently found to be accurate.

The prediction states when the next star will fall, as well as how many there are until the 'rapture'. The link to join their cause leads to a YouTube channel called "Mr. Beast".
Cult-like behaviors[3] are commonplace within congregations, according to members that have been interrogated. Little is known about their ventures other than this due to their strict secrecy. Those questioned were located by group members and found dead even when kept in government custody.
Thoughts put forward by the group toward the public were met with skepticism, but when their predictions were proven right again and again people began to join en masse. The number of members peaked in 2005 after the ninth star appeared, due to the belief that there was a rapture soon to occur after this that would save the believers and kill all others.
The rapture did indeed happen. The believers threw themselves to the Katamari and were assimilated into the new Moon, while nonbelievers were taken involuntarily. When it descended again as the Moon and began to take continents, most left behind were killed instantly. Those that somehow escaped were left in hell on earth, which led to the conversion of almost every remaining human[4].
Those still alive either muerted themselves or lived in underground bunkers[5] praying for the return of the Katamari. Unless you were just built different and didn't care 💀
Some conspiracy theorists suggest that most higher-ups were believers, which explains the strange way the group was dealt with at the time and also how the Nine Stars were able to access hostages and those in custody. This has been dismissed by the accused.
[1] Congress was strangely against its formation, but it was put into place eventually by the global census.
[2] The radius of our traditional moon was 1,079.6 miles, the Katamari's radius was 300 meters, and the new moon's radius is 1979.4 miles. The volume of the traditional moon was 1010 km3, and the new moon is more than double its size. Because mass is directly proportional to force, the new force of gravity would double as well. It was also directly rolling across the Earth for several minutes.

[5] Some believers took no precautions, thinking that the Katamari and whatever gods control it would keep them safe. Because of this, they may have stayed in their normal homes during an earthquake or other natural disaster.
