Chapter 3
MYLES
I spot a tree with thick leaves and comfortable branches and I climb onto it. This is where I'll be spending the rest of the night from.
I'm drenched to the core and the nice clothes and expensive shoes I wore feel heavy on me. I can't get rid of them since I don't have any other clothes with me. All I do is lie back on a branch, contemplating my next move.
Things have taken a great twist!
Just before I went to bed, I remember my dad kissing me goodnight just like the little boy that I am. If only I knew he was bidding me goodbye, I wouldn't have rushed to my room to play with my toys. I'd have stayed with him for a little longer till I sleep on his arms!
The nauseating image of Michael driving a sword through mum's chest is still clear in my mind. Oh, poor mother, she didn't deserve to die such a painful death! Painful tears sting my eyes and I try as much as possible to keep them at a bay.
I remember my father's words whenever I hurt myself or was in pain! He'd urge me to bite the lower lip as the man that I am, claiming that men do not cry anyhow!
Well, it hurts to lose one parent but losing both at this tender age, especially in the hands of someone I used to trust and look up to is hurting. Oh no! Will I ever overcome this?
My mother's voice urging me to run away is still ringing in my ears. She was such a caring mother who ensured I had everything at my disposal. She ensured I never lacked at all!
She was selfless and mindful of others. Even in her death, she couldn't stop worrying about my safety. All she wanted was for me to make it out of the Pack safely without any injury. Oh, goddess! May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace!
I can't get any sleep due to the cold I'm feeling. My clothes are wet and since it's still raining, I can't just do anything to keep myself warm.
Morning is fast approaching and soon enough, people will start moving around the Pack.
Word would have reached the neighbouring pack about the missing Prince and warriors will be combing every bush looking for me.
This is the same Pack where my dad's brother's evil mate came from and since I know she's the mastermind behind all these killings and dad's overthrowing, I'm sure she won't relent till she gets hold of me!
Since I can now see perfectly well, I climb down the tree and I walk towards the border where the warriors manning the Greenspan Pack border are. I'm quite familiar with the place and everybody else knows that I'm the prince of Riverside Pack. I just don't know how to convince them to let me pass to the nearby town where only humans reside.
I don't have any plans on where to live yet but I'm sure with the guidance of the moon goddess, I'll find a place soon.
I attend a school where most of the students are humans and I usually mingle with them. I love listening to their stories and I one day overheard them talking about an orphan girl who lives in the homeless children's home.
Ahh! How I wish I can find one which is willing to take me in. Well, the only way anyone would be willing to take me in is if I pretend to be human. I'll just cross my fingers praying that I don't blow my cover!
“Prince Myles, prince Myles!” I jump up in fright when I hear someone calling me from behind. I turn and my cheeks sag in relief when I see the guard who helped mum and me to escape hurrying to catch up with me.
“Bruce?” I call in shock. “Have they sent you to catch me?” I ask, waiting for his answer so that I can run for my life.”
“No my Prince. I can't harm you, besides, no one knows that I'm here!”
“Why are you here then?” I ask curiously.
“To rescue you, my Prince. To help you run as far away from this place as possible. If your uncle and his minions catch you, they'll kill you so let's stop wasting time!”
“Oh, thank heavens!” I sigh. “So, how are you intending to help me cross the border to the human's town? I ask curiously.
“Don't worry about that. Come here!” he beckons me to go to him and I do as instructed. He has a wrapper with him but I'm yet to know his intentions.
“Climb onto my back,” he instructs. “I'll tie you at my back with this wrapper and conceal you completely. As we approach the border, I know the guards will be interested to know where we are headed to and I'll lie to them that you're wounded and I'm looking for a hospital for you to get treated. I just hope they won't be suspicious!”
“But you're a guard from another pack. Will they allow you to pass?” I still have my doubts.
“They won't say no to my request especially when they'll realise you're seriously wounded. All you need to do is to groan as if in pain and if anyone tries to touch you, groan even louder but don't let them see your face!”
I nod in understanding as I climb onto his back. He ties me to him with the wrapper which thankfully hides everything about me.
“The nearby town is just a few kilometres away. I'll let you go immediately we get away from the guards and from there you'll find your way to someone's home. Humans are said to be kind people and if you pretend to be homeless and one of them, they'll surely take you in.”
We're fast approaching where the border guards are and even if I can't see them, I can hear them conversing in high tones.
“Hey there!” one of them calls after seeing Bruce approaching. “Who are you and where do you think you're going?” he asks, his raising his commanding tone.
“Hello there, this human boy got lost in the Pack and as I was there in the river hunting and fishing, I saw him groaning and screaming after being attacked by an unidentified animal. He isn't speaking and my Alpha instructed me to take him to the human's town so that I can help him get treated and also trace his family!”
Oh, my goddess! Bruce can lie for a living!
“Young boy, what's your name?” the guard touches my leg and I groan as if in intense pain. That makes him step back and I'm sure my pretence and acting have fooled him. I just wish I could see his reactions.
“More guards have approached us and I hear the first one telling them that I'm human and I'm hurt. I hear them conversing further and they unanimously agree to allow Bruce and I to proceed!
All this while, I'm groaning as well as holding my breath, hoping that everything will be just fine!
Bruce thanks them and starts walking away and my groaning intensifies with every step he makes. I have to make this seem real if at all I want to get out of here alive!
My heart beats hard inside my chest as Bruce moves further. I can't hear the guards conversing and I can tell we're now away from them.
“Step down my prince. We're safe!” Bruce says as he undoes the wrapper.
I gladly step down from his back and I survey my surroundings. We're approaching a small town with several buildings, just like the humans build them. The only scent I can perceive of a werewolf is Bruce's but humans scent is all over the place.
“You can walk further into the town. I just need to get back to the palace before anyone notices my absence. Here, this is my number. Call me anytime and I'll gladly answer. Tell me immediately you settle!”
“Thank you very much, Bruce. But why did you help me?”
“Just be safe my prince. I'll tell you when the time comes!”
“So how will you get back there? The guards will start suspecting and maybe, a word about the killings and my escape will have reached them by then!”
“You worry too much dear. Watch me!” He says and there by then, he shifts to a big brown wolf. He wags his tail at me and sprints away but not before licking my hands as a sign of affection and goodbye!
Oh my goodness! I actually underestimated him!
