More Than One Steve?

As aggravated and tired as I already was, I hear a gnarling sound, I figured that it sounded familiar, and I looked behind me and saw I zombie breathing on my neck about to bite off a big chunk of meat. I smiled, then elbowed it in the stomach, it was winded, then I kneed it in the face as it was bent over breathing. I knocked it out. I stomped on it's face. I wondered who the person it could have been since that it looked a little like me. I looked back into the book Notch wrote, I saw "Multiplayer" again, I'm not the only Steve? I started seeing unrealistic and reasonable names with numbers and underscores. Wait, I may be the only Steve, but who are these people? So I went back to "Options" and it said "Open to LAN" I need to figure out what it was and what could happen if I activate it.
