I saw him there, looking through the language books section. I asked him if he needed any help. I didn't expect him to spill his story. I didn't expect us to become friends. I didn't expect us to become close. But you know what they say, always expect the unexpected.

"My daughter is doing this report you see, we need books on marine animals. Walruses in particular." A woman explained. She was wearing a bright pink Juicy Couture sweat suit with perfect white sneakers. I nodded, politely telling her to follow me. I led her to the shelf that contained all of our books on marine life. She thanked me, and asked me to help her pick them out. I gladly helped her. I was scanning the shelves, recommending books and handing her them.
"So do you have a girlfriend?" She asked out of nowhere.
I purposely avoided the question, playing it off as 'I didn't hear.' I continued my search for books. I found another one her daughter may find useful and I handed it to her. Instead of a 'Thank you.' or a 'That would be all.' I received a "You didn't answer my question."
I looked around the bookstore, praying for an excuse. not finding one, I answered her question. "No. I don't have a girlfriend." I responded still looking for books. She seemed especially put on by this as she hummed in approval.
"I'm newly divorced you see." She mused, twirling her short hair.
"I'm sorry about that." I responded, feeling awkward.
She rolled her eyes as I found the last few books.
"How would you feel about being a rebound?"
My eyes widened as I yet again pulled the 'I didn't hear you.' I handed her the last book then motioned for her to follow me. Before I could comprehend what was happening, the books were on the floor, her hands were around my neck and my back was against the shelf. She was whispering something in my ear, but all I could hear was the sound of a car pulling into the small parking lot. It was a black Toyota Corolla. It was Dominique's car. It was my boyfriends car. I saw him get out, seven red roses in hand. They were tied together with a ribbon. A yellow ribbon. Yellow was my favorite color. She was nibbling on my earlobe as he walked in, looking around for me.
"Dominique." I choked out, silently begging for help.
As much as she was talking into my ear, all I could hear was the soft fwump of roses hitting carpet. I looked up to his face and saw a mixture of shock, sadness and anger.
"Kellin." He said in a broken voice. He made eye contact me and I saw just how broken he was. He broke the eye contact and stared at is feet as he walked out, never picking up the roses. I watched him go, the right tail light of a corolla, the last sight I had of him.
"G-Get off of me." I choked out coldly after a large amount of silence. She seemed oblivious to the fact she just ruined a relationship, judging by how much she was still flirting with me, and how casually she was acting.
"Come with me, I'll ring you up." I said distantly.
"Damn right you will." She handed me a pink slip of paper with a phone number on it.
I sighed and took her money in exchange for the books. She sent me a wink on her way out, the bell tinkling and the soft closing of the door as she left. I rested my elbows on the counter, digging the heels of my hands into my eyes.
"Fuck."
