AUTHORS NOTE; ughhhh school starts soon so maybe I wont be able to write this but I enjoy writing hopefully I still will, this book is my escape from reality
I wake from a pretty restful night. My alarm going off was the only thing to stir that. Of course, like any normal person I hit snooze and move off to the other side of my king sized bed.
I never doubted that my mother was well off but overseas, we lived much more modestly than here in Gotham, my childhood room being a lot smaller, but here my open room with a personal bath and balcony is just insane. I try to fill it up with things, having a lot of objects to fill the clutter; things like my archery kit and academic trophys. I collect books and tend to pick up hobbies almost as fast as I drop them so my room is filled with unfinished projects I try to commit to.
That is the thing I am most proud of, I love the clutter of my room, I love the fact that even though it is four connected walls one side is just the slightest longer to make it a rectangle instead of a cookie cutter square. I love that the north side where my door is has a slightly turned in roof where I can perfectly hang tapestries and posters. I love that I have south facing windows and an eastward balcony entrance where I can have the daintiest of floral printed curtains and the most wonderful of built-in shelves that stay over and around the balcony doorframe. Small imperfections make my room the way I love to live, I put effort into fixing up a room to be exactly how I wish for it to be and in turn I love my room. If up to me I would never leave the silken sheets of my bed or the wooden floors of my room. It is just too much to deal with the outside world when my room is perfect.
That is why when our houseman, Henry, finally came to wake me up.
"Miss Ellison, for once this school year I wish to not have to awaken you." Henry says with a defeated sigh.
I turn away from the door and lift the blanket over my head, ignoring the words of the man.
"Miss Ellison!" I hear again.
Realizing I unfortunately cannot ignore Henry I sit up, hoping the droop I feel in my eyes and stiffness of my bones carry into emotions and voice something to the man.
Henry looks at me unamused and hands me a tray with my breakfast on it, a bowl of oats with a green juice smoothie. "I must get your sister awake as well, she will be late for school are you up to driving this morning or shall I fetch the chauffeur." Henry asks me as he straightens out my bedside table.
"I'll be driving today Henry, figured I could study since I won't be having my first two hours today." I let him know as I make a small push motion with my hands, effectively shooing him away. "I could have gotten ready in time go ready Adelyn she is more moody in the morning."
"More moody than you miss? I hardly doubt."
I shoot Henry a glare which earns a small stifled laugh as he makes his way out my room, allowing me to focus on my room more closely.
Henry has been working for us since we have moved. We joke that Henry comes with the house, though we have many workers Henry is the only one that closely works for the well being of my younger sister Adelyn and I. He was about 18 when he started and is the closest thing I will get to a brother but in the mornings when he chooses to wake me up against my will he feels more like an arch nemesis.
I put the remainder of my breakfast aside, grabbing the cup my smoothie is in as I take it to the bathroom with the intention to finish it while I get ready.
My routine is simple yet unwavering. I always eat, then take my smoothie to the bathroom, wash my face, finish my smoothie, do my hair, brush my teeth, then do my makeup. It is always that and it always works so if I am truly trying I can get it all done within 30 minutes. That is record time for any woman in my household.
I do exactly that, making my way out of the bathroom to change into my schools uniform. The uniform itself is quite stylish, a deep grey knee-length skirt with a white button-up. In the winter, like right now, we are permitted to wear a black crewneck sweater over the button up but usually it is a black sweater vest. The deep colors do nicely against my brown skin but the black of the top makes it almost blend with my black curly hair which makes me upset. Because of this, I always pair it with a white bow to put my hair in a half up style or with a headband. Today I went with the bow. We get white argyle socks that show just slightly over the black doc martins we are told to wear and a tie that is colored based on the grade you are in, seniors get black of course.
My school's uniform isn't the best by far, I have seen people create their own uniforms to look better but it also isn't the worst. Some private schools are given khakis and polos so at least we are doing better than that.
I finish dressing and head out my room, heading to the activities room to wait for my younger sister who fortunately showed up on Henry's back only a few minutes after I opened up my book.
"Tae, don't you have about 30 books you're reading?" Adelyn asks me.
"Only four. One on my phone, one for school, one in this room, and one in my bedroom." I correct, closing the book and standing up.
"Why one cannot just carry a book around is beyond me." Henry sneers sarcastically, putting Adelyn down.
"Why one must baby someone who already thinks she is a princess is also, beyond me." I snap back, smiling as if innocent.
Adelyn, my adorable younger sister was about two when we arrived to Gotham. Overseas we had no waitstaff and didn't truly have any benefits. The wage gap here in Gotham makes it so many times Adelyn believes poor people to be a myth created by our mom to scare her. Adelyn is eight now and still doesn't fully grasp the idea of independence but Henry having been there all her life to baby her most certainly doesn't help.
Adelyn stomps her foot and crosses her arms, obviously getting impatient. "Can we hurry now! We get to start the day with our special!" Adelyn informs us.
I nod, taking my little sisters hand while Henry shows us through, our backpacks waiting by the door for us and my car pulled up to the front. I pick up my bag and wait for Adelyn before heading out the door, waving goodbye to Henry as I do so. I walk to my car, it being already unlocked I step in and Adelyn follows in with me.
I press the button to start up the car, waiting for Adelyn to get situated in the back.
Adelyn goes to Gotham's private academy elementary school, GPAE as they call it.
I personally never went to the elementary school but it isn't that much of a difference from the high school or even middle school. They are all in the same area, The elementary building being next to the middle school and then the high school buildings directly across from that. All in similar styles it practically looks like a college campus. The most drastic thing is honestly the uniforms, where as I have my pre described uniform Adelyn's is a white button up, grey skirt only. Instead of a tie the elementary children are given name tags to pin onto their shirts at all times.
The drive takes us about five minutes and somehow in five minutes Adelyn and I always manage to fill the time to the brim. Adelyn controlling music from the back as well as tell me every little bit of information that happens with her and her classmates cannot be crammed into five small minutes. By the time we arrive, Adelyn is begging me to go around the block at least three more times. I make her a promise to go to the coffee shop after school, we can continue the conversation there.
Adelyn agrees and I take her into her building, meaning I now have about an hour to myself. I head back into my car figuring I could go to the library and get some studying done.
•••
The library is empty, at least from what I can see, The Gotham Library is huge. Filled with books that are almost as old as the city. Granted there was no way anything in Gotham would be new. I think the newest thing within Gotham is the factory my mother owns.
I take my seat within the center of the library. Pulling out a few books and my computer to begin working on my Statistics project that I was very much procrastinating.
It was only about seven minutes into me working when I heard a thud and a few books falling. Me honestly not even wanting to work and being extremely curious I decided to go check it out. I followed the source of the sound. My hands run along the bookshelves, stopping when I meet two boys.
One of the boys, the one that I think fell, was the one to notice me. He sheepishly points back at me, making the other turn back. My eyes lock onto that boy. He was holding the other one by his shirt. His black hair did a good job at hiding his eyes but I was still able to make out the blue eyes that hid behind them.
I take a few steps back, mouth open and eyes furrowing. Fucking Dick Grayson. "What the hell Dick!" I whisper yell. He drops the other boy, allowing for him to fall just a bit more and clash with more books.
"Tae? Jesus fucking christ I thought you were a worker." Dick responds, almost as if forgetting that he left me on delivered for five years. Saying my name as if we were friends.
I scoff, pushing past Dick to help up his friend. A skinny boy who when I helped him up looked really rough. His red hair going in probably every direction and tape holding up his glasses. I pull him up and begin to help him put back the books that fell.
I give the other a small smile and turn back to go back to working.
"Rude.." I hear Dick mutter. That pissed me off.
"Rude? Me rude? Fuck you Dick, you left me on delivered intentionally and you have the audacity to say rude to me?" I snap back. Walking closer to him, eventually pushing him and making him stumble.
I push him once more and make him fall backwards, scoffing as I do so. "Thats for making this kid here fall."
Dick rolls his eyes and looks over at the red head making the other boy look almost panicked.
"Well uhm, hi my name is Wally. Actually my name is Wallace but that sounds so loser so everyone calls me Wally." The boy starts as he helps Dick off the ground. "I wont lie, me falling isn't Dick's fault. Actually I fell I am just really hungry and I need food but Dick here survives off air so I am sorry for disturbing you."
I shake my head, almost feeling bad for making this kid, Wally, apologize. "No it's not your fault I don't know who's so inconsiderate that they allow their friends to get that hungry."
Wally helps Dick up and Wally gives me the sweetest smile. I ignore my old friend and reach into my pocket, giving Wally my unopened Cliff Bar.
I watch his face light up as he takes it, taking the quickest and biggest bite I have ever seen anyone take.
"Thank you." Wally says with a mouth full of the bar.
I nod, "don't mention it. I have to go now, school but you have a good day Wally and get some food soon." I let Dick know I am ignoring him. Eyes never meeting his again as I head back to my table, collecting all my things as I leave out the library. As I leave I realize that I just successfully left Dick on delivered, except his must've hurt ten times more.
